First to say this hostel is great for meeting people and if you are on your own it would be a good bet but be aware of a few things, firstly we made reservations which were no longer available to us, we were offered an apartment which was basically a floor in someones house, not a problem but we did feel a little guilty when some poor guy started packing his clothes up for us to sleep in his bedroom!! Then we went back to the hostel to stay our second night. We walked straight in the front door which was open and were greeted to a complete mess (this was obviously due to a late night party the night before) we were there for an hour before any member of staff started shift (they say 24 hour reception but this is not the case!) We put our bags in the locker with our own padlock as the room wasnt ready for us and went out to explore the gorgeous Essaouira. We got back later that night and were shown to a very cramped 8 bed dorm with barely any room on the floor due to bags and belongings of 8 people, I took my bag upstairs to my locker but my friend left hers in the downstairs locker to save lugging it up and trying to fit it into the very cramped room - big mistake!! She got up at 7am to go and get a change of clothes, and the padlock had been broken and her bag (phone, camera, money, laptop) all gone. There was no one on reception and we had no way of getting in touch with anybody, we tried calling the police and there was no answer, we had to wait 3 hours till 10am before a member of staff arrived who then went to get someone else, who then went to get yet someone else. There was an indication from one of the guys (who is supposed to work nights) that the problem was not accepted and he didn't believe us as there is rarely any crime in Essaouira, not helpful when you have nothing but the clothes you slept in to your name. We were also told that they were too short staffed to deal with 24 hour working as they were all so tired. Left a bitter taste to the end of our amazing time in Essaouira. We went to the police who were really helpful and the Chief of Police escorted us to the hostel to do a check on security. I wouldnt stay here until they have 24 hour reception, you could easily be left in the street if you have a late night out or be unable to get back in after breakfast unless you left the door open, neither of which are acceptable.
