“Ok with a few areas for improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

The hostel is ok if you like the hippie, sand and surf atmosphere.

Here are the things I like about the hostel:
1. Brahim, the hostel owner: He is a great guy. He is helpful and accommodating. He helped arrange for a big taxi to bring us from Marrakech to Essaouira and back. We got an SUV instead. We thoroughly enjoyed the drive :-)
2. Chill Out areas: I liked the areas with the hammok and guitar, and the terrace.
3. Central Location: The location is central to most significant or "must see" spots. But I wouldnt recommend getting back to the hostel late at night. Not all alleys are adequately lighted.
4. Very helpful hostel staff :-)

And , here are the things I dont like about the hostel:

1. Poor Ventilation: the big den or living room past the reception area is supposed to be the heart of the hostel. A bar, big flat screen TV, couches, sports gear rental, left luggage lockers and PCs with internet access are all here. But when you enter, the room is stuffy with a strong cigarette smell. For non-smokers like me it was very difficult to stay even a minute in that room.
2. Lack of Cleanliness: The bedrooms and toilets are not that clean. I'd understand this because the hostel was full when we got there. I saw only only cleaning lady doing everything. When we needed pillow cases, it was the hostel owner who had to look for the items. We ended up using flat sheets as pillow cases.

Room Tip: Specify a room with a window and always reconfirm your reservation specs

“Ok..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

The hostel is ok, specially if your younger like 18-20. Then you will meet a lot of people and have some fun nights.
For me the crowd was too young and I would never go there with kids, it wouldn´t feel safe. The hostel is very dirty and the rooms smells bad.. :( Would recommend you to bring your own sheets.
However the staff is very friendly and the location is good. It´s easy to find with the directions from the hostel. I walked from Bab Marrakech and found it immediately, first time that happend in Morocco! A bit dark to go the late at nights.

“BEST Hostel EVER!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2011

Imagine you arrive in Essaouria, travel through the winding medina to arrive at a perfectly situated hostel... the door is open... and you are excitingly greeted my young, cool, and energetic hostel owner and amazing staff! But, not like other hostels/hotels you don't just check-in. First you get invited into the lounge area where later that night the staff will cook and share a beer with you!

After getting to know you a little bit, you go upstairs (past the hamocks) to your room! Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix themed rooms with an amazing terrace complete the hostel's perfect picture!

This was one of the most chill places I have ever been! I felt like I had been there months in a matter of minutes!

I am so happy my friends and I stumbled upon this hostel over spring break! When my friends came to visit me in Morocco, I also took them to stay here!

If you never left the hostel you would have the time of your life... eating Moroccan food, being serenaded with guitars and singing in the lounge, swinging and relaxing on the hammocks, and enjoying the company of new friends!

“Great staff, average facilities.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2011

We went to Essaouira for a couple of days after getting a bit tired of the hassle of Marrakech. Essaouira is an old "hippie destination", and that is mainly the kind of people you meet at Essaouira Hostel. The hostel is in other words very laid back, and the staff is awesome. They show you the best places to go out, and hang out with you at the hostel all the time.

The only negative things I have to say about this hostel is that the rooms are at least not above average and the cleanliness is not on top either. We had initially booked two beds in a 10-bedroom dorm, but the room was so cramped that it was not possible to even get our luggage in there (to be fair, we weren't exactly travelling light (two large suitcases). Still, in my opinion, that should have been a 4 or maybe 6 bedroom dorm, not 10. Maybe we shouldn't expect more when the price was around 5 EUR a night(!). But, the staff was helpful, and upgraded us to a 2 bed private room, with it's own shower (not toilet) for a fair price.

And then about the cleanliness; in this respect the hostel might be a bit too laid back! In the bathrooms it often lacked toilet paper, and there were usually no soap either. The facilities also looks a bit worn down, but that is not really a problem.

Except for this the hostel is great, there is free wifi, nice common areas (which includes a rooftop terrace and a hammock floor, in addition to a large "living room" with a bar, couches, tables, and a couple of computers), and the location is great, pretty central in the medina.

As long as you are aware of the shortcomings, I would recommend this hostel - it's great for relaxing!
