“Great first experience of Mauritius”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Spent 7 nights at Sugar Beach first week in Feb. Booked a Superior Room which was definitely worth paying extra for. Our room was near the South Pool - quiet pool. Further away from the restaurants and gym but ideal location for us with a fantastic sea view 20 metres from the beach with the most wonderful sunsets.

Buffet breakfast and dinner in the main restaurant was first class. Citronella restaurant included with Half Board - personally a little bit disappointed with our dinner but nice setting and good staff. Tides Restaurant on the beach paid for a la carte dinner which was absolutely fantastic and glad we did it, great for lunch and awesome Moijto's!

Gym first class, excellent fitness classes and really good, attentive and knowledgeable fitness instructors.

All staff at the hotel were great together with the General Manager Andrew who made himself available to guests.

Room Tip: Superior room

“Our Fourth holiday here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Visited again end Jan begin. Feb. Had a wonderful time. All inclusive package particularly good with restaurant options. All staff very pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: If you like it very quiet, ask for a room near the smaller pool

“Very nice hotel but no ocean to swim”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

This hotel is really nice, clean. Very nicely decorated rooms, spacious. Spa is ok but can be better. Delicious food, high quality of service. One very important drawback- the ocean is not good enough to swim. You can just take bath in it:-). Very disappointing. This was our first time in Mauritius and we did know about the wind in the East but did not know that not more than 7 hotels in Mauritius have decent sea/ocean where you can really swim. This time we are planning to go to another hotel where the beach is considered to be one of the best in Mauritious. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel except for the ocean. If you are not interested in it than it is excellent choice. Anyway there is a very nice pool there or an alternative to go to the hotel nearby where the sea is better. Need to mention quite expensive drinks and food. We were buying water and wine in the shops nearby on in Port Louis. Ask your travel agent about weather conditions (rain, wind) at the time of travel to choose right coast and about the beach/ocean if important.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are better

“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

This was the first holiday I have been on where I did not want to return home!
The resort is spectacularly picturesque and modern. I am not a fan of the thatch look and this resort has hardly any of that. There is lots of light, the gardens are stunning and the pools are massive.
We went half board and found that this worked out better for us, as full board was R1000 or EUR 100 for a couple per day. The drinks are all excessively expensive, and there is a Spar 5 minutes away where you can buy all your drinks and snacks. The staff do not mind if you take them to dinner, they'll even put your drinks in an ice bucket for you!
We also enjoyed eating lunch outside of the hotel- at least you get to experience a bit more of the local restaurants.
If you are a big drinker and intend to spend alot of time at the hotel, it may be better to go AI.
We had a room opposite the spa. near to the gym and we found this to be quiet and peaceful. Hardly any mosquitos on the property.
I recall reading some reviews where people complained of mice- there are mice at night but they are really harmless and live in the gardens.
Some of the buffet staff appear sullen but this did not bother us, the reception staff were more than willing to assist and the service from the managers was excellent too.
The selection at the buffet is vast and you will not get tired of the food. Every night there is a different theme to dinner and it is all of a very high standard.
At Citronella's. my husband felt ill and I stayed on to finish my meal and requested that they send his to the room as he was not well. The manager came to the table and asked if they should send a nurse to the room. We also got many follow up calls to see how he was feeling and if he needed anything. It is very helpful that there is a clinic on site at the hotel.
On the shopping side, you can get cheap tshirts (Polo) and handbags at the shops that are a short walk away from the hotel. There is a public bus that costs 22 rupees per person and it will take you all the way through Flic and Flac- no need for taxis.
I can highly recommend the tour of the East side by speed boat- we went to Blue Bay and did wonderful snorkelling. Ile Aux Cerfs is also absolutely stunning.
We were a bit disappointed that the beach (in the sea) was so full of coral that it made it difficult to swim, but aqua shoes will sort this out.
All in all a FANTASTIC holiday- I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

“excellent all round hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012
6
people found this review helpful

Accomadation: Excellent rooms with a bath and shower - shampoo and shower gel provided.Good a/c and daily towel change if required - good quality towels.
If you have kids or you like it lively, get a room in the North villas (501-577) on the Manor House block (601-680) - only standard rooms. If you like it quiet and are prepared to walk a little further to the amenities, ask for a South Villa (701-801) around the quiet pool.
These are a 5 min walk to the main restaurant, the reception and Tides bar and restaurant, 10 mins to Citronella's bar and restaurant and about 15 mins to the amenities and restaurants of La Pirogue hotel next door.
Food: Excellent in all restaurants. Main buffet has wide choice and is not too busy if you miss the peak time (7-30) but even then is OK. The other 4 restaurants in which most choices are free if you are on all inclusive offer great presentation and service but you must book the previous day (No limit to how often you go)
A note of caution is that most meat in all the restaurants contain garlic and if you dont like this it is best to ask during the day to have your choice garlic free.
The buffet restaurant is closed at lunch so you can use Tides or Citronellas but the snacks can be quite big and expensive if you are not on AI.
All Inclsive option: We went AI and probably got our monies worth. To give you an idea of the prices if not AI the following is a guide;
Bottle of water - £2-80, Glass of wine - £4-00, Bottle of wine (about 5 choices each of red, rose and white) - £19-50, Lunchtime snack - £7-00 to £18-00, Soft drinks £3-00, Coffee - £4-50 and Gin & Tonics - £10.

Room Tip: See description above - all rooms are very similar inside.
