“Very relaxing holiday - Disappointing Dive Centre”

We spent a week at Komandoo in January on the less favourably reviewed Sunset side. I have to say that it was fine and we had a great time staying in a standard Beach Villa. Yes you can see a local island from the beach so if you're not the live and let live type and want complete escapism - stay on the other side! On the plus side we found the sea to be much calmer and more sheltered on our side and the snorkelling which is amazing on both sides of the island, is much easier as a result. We can understand some of the negative reviews - if the islanders were building or making substantial noise it would travel and make things less than perfect, and it is worth noting that the neighbouring island is expanding, so we don't know what it will be like in a few years time. However we had no problems, just lazy days in the sun on a very clean white beach!

The restaurant and general service are excellent. We found all of the hotel staff very helpful and the waiting staff very attentive. Buffet meals for a week would be a challenge if they were not as good as Komandoo, the menu was large and had plenty of variety including some veggie options.

Diving was not as good - like an earlier review I found the staff not as friendly or helpful as the hotel, quite a contrast in fact. I would only recommend diving here if you are very self-sufficient and don't mind diving with minimal interaction from a dive guide. Large groups (up to 9 divers with 1 guide) and poor supervision made me cut my diving short. In my opinion this is not a PADI 5 star resort - only in name. There appeared to be very little duty of care towards divers exhibited by the staff and this made me uncomfortable to dive with them again. Fortuntely as they only schedule 2 one tank dives a day, I guess I didn't miss much.

In conlusion we think Komandoo definately deserves a visit, comparing it to boutique resorts we've stayed at in the Carribean and Asia, it is equally as good and has the unique charm of no roads and a bare foot experience for the whole week! The staff were lovely and helped make it a memorable week, the poor diving experience didn't put us off because the snorkelling is so amazing and more than made up for it.

“Excellent hotel and friendly staff, but wouldn't stay for too long”

We only stayed 4 nights half board, but were treated as well as anyone else on the island with a fantastic honeymoon package and great friendly service all round. Would recommend half board as its much cheaper unless you are going to be getting drunk every night! Saying that, prices are quite expensive for drinks ($5 for water or soft drinks) but depends how much you want to eat and drink! Be careful not to leave any food lying around in your room otherwise you will get lots of ants! The hotel runs 2 free boat trips that you can make use of - a sunset cruise where we spotted dolphins and a trip to a nearby deserted island where they leave you for a few hours for snorkelling. There are other trips you can go on (at a cost) and I think you'd want to if you stayed longer. Make sure you stay near your room around 11am/12am when they give out very nice (and free) smoothies along the beach! Also there was a friendly turtle on the sunset side that we swam with for about 20 minutes! The shop has a fairly good stock of essentials and souvenirs, but the prices are amusing - $5 for a fridge magnet that you can buy for $1 at the airport! They do need to have more vegetarian options at dinner - there is an unnessecary abundance of meat dishes, but you won't starve if you are vegetarian and my wife got on ok in the end, but we opted to try their al a carte restaurant on the 4th night as we got a bit bored of the buffet. That restaurant is on the pier and has a window in the floor so you can look down at the fish swimming around at night which is fun! Finally you must try the coconut milkshake in the bar, we had one every day we were there!

Room Tip: Sunrise just because of the views, although the sunset had calmer water for snorkelling

“Not sure this time”

This was not our first trip to Komandoo, and overall it's certainly better than last year but I'm really not convinced it's worth the money.

Other reviews have mentioned about the boat loads of guests brought over from Kuredo and we certainly agree that this tarnishes the island. It's not a cheap place and we saved hard to come again so it's very frustrating to have people come over for free. It's hard not to blame the guests who've come over but obviously they just took a good deal. Why not reduce the cost of Komandoo slightly so it will be full of those who've looked forward to it specifically instead of filling it with others?

The food is better than before and the island is still incredibly beautiful but a little maintenance on the villas would be welcomed. They are not bad, but just need a little TLC to make them feel more special.

I'm not sure about the management either. We only saw the resort manager at the repeater party - he seems very distant at all other times. The lady who met us on the jetty seemed pleasant enough but it all seemed a bit fake to me. Losing Claire from reception was not good. She was great last year and even better this year and the reception team seemed to get lost after she went.

I sincerely hope the problems in the Madives get resolved as quickly as possible so there is no danger to the wonderful islands being visited by Europeans. They really are one of the wonders of the world and everyone should experience them if they can. We will certainly return to the Maldives, but Komandoo seems to have lost it's lustre so maybe it will be another island. It's hard to put a finger on exactly what has changed, but the feeling just isn't quite right.

Shame.

Room Tip: Ignore stories about the local island and take a room on the sunset side. The evening sun is specta...

“Paradise for Honeymooners!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We spent an week in Komandoo on honeymoon and it was what I would imagine heaven to be like! Absolutely idyllic from beginning to end!

The island is TINY (500m long by 80 m wide) and you can walk around it in 10 min. because it is so small, they only accommodate relatively few guests, and apart from mealtimes you hardly ever see any other people! No children are allowed on the island, so if you\re looking for a family vacation look elsewhere, but if you are a couple looking for the most romantic holiday of your lives then this place is for you!

We stayed in a water villa, which feel very exclusive as there are only 15 of them and they are 200m out to see, connected to the island by a long boardwalk. If you are elderly or don’t like walking 5-10min to get your meals then you might want to rather stay in a beach villa, but trust me you’ll be eating so much you’ll welcome the little bit of exercise! The villas are just amazing, complete with 2 person Jacuzzi, four poster bed and staircase into the sea. You have complete privacy on your balcony, and you can sit and watch baby sharks and rays swim in the crystal clear water below. You can even snorkel from your room – there are reefs and fish a few metres away!

The reception and restaurant staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the food was amazing! We were on the half board option (breakfast and dinner included) which I would recommend as 3 buffet meals a day can be a bit much. There are wonderful activities included such as taking a boat to a nearby deserted island to snorkel, and a sunset cruise where we watched dolphins put on a show for us.

The dive centre was the only area I was not very impressed with, as I found the staff there rather unfriendly and unhelpful. Never the less, we did 2 great dives while we were there.
My final recommendation would be to do the candlelit dinner on the beach…pricey but worth every cent! AMAZING food, completely private and ridiculously romantic…a real highlight!
Would go back in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Go for the watervillas! they are absolutely amazing. Alternatively if you are taking a beach room...

“Amazing Maldivian Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My partner and I visited Komandoo in January 2012 for 10 nights, staying in a Water Villa on the All Inclusive Gold/A La Carte option.

Komandoo provided exactly what we wanted from our holiday - a quiet, relaxing and luxurious break. The island is very small (just what we wanted) and is perfect if you plan to relax, sunbathe, snorkel, dive, etc. There is also the option to participate in water sports (windsurfing, kayaking, etc).

Our Water Villa was lovely (Eagle Ray 13) and I would definitely recommend asking for a room (either water villa or beach villa) on the sunrise side. The view from that side of the island is stunning. The view from the other side of the island is still nice, but you can see a neighbouring island which isn't very pretty. The room had effective A/C, a comfortable bed, clean and spacious bathroom inc. jacuzzi bath. The deck had a double sun lounger, day bed and table/chairs. If I had any complaints, it would be that the loungers are a bit uncomfortable and old. I also think two separate loungers would be better, so guests can choose to sit in the sun/shade, etc.

The steps down from the villa took us straight into the crystal clear waters, teeming with tropical fish, rays, reef sharks, etc. It is great for snorkelling, and you can head out to the reef from here (although weak swimmers should take care as the tide is very strong).

We are not normally fans of buffet options, but the food was excellent. Each night, the food changed so it didn't get at all repetitive. Alongside the buffet food, they serve meat/fish, etc straight from the grill, served to your liking. The deserts were particularly good! The drinks included in our package were good, all the usual spirits, beer and house wine. Cocktails were also included but weren't great...think the bar staff could benefit from learning some new recipes!

We participated in the Sunset Cruise which was great - the staff directed the boat to the open water where we saw dolphins playing in the water, etc. It was fantastic! We also got some great photos of the island (from the boat) and of the beautiful sunset. Would recommend the trip (it is included in most packages).

There are a few comments on here about the staff - I have to say that in general, the staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. There were a few who let the side down, but the majority were fantastic.

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing Maldivian holiday, then this is the place for you...enjoy!

Room Tip: Opt for a room on the sunrise side of the island
