We returned to Biyadhoo on 19th Jan 2012 after a very waterlogged visit in Sept 2010 and are happy to report there was 'water, water everywhere' and not a drop of rain!!! Thus ensued 14 glourious days of sun, sea, white sands and all inclusive cocktails! Only one minor hitch, an overbooking on arrival meant our first night was spent on another island (Makunudu?) which resulted in a promptly offered (and greatfully accepted) compensation package from the Kuoni rep Zoe for our trouble (two hour wait at Male and the inconvenience of not being able to 'really start' our holiday immediately). I have to say, a night on another island acutally turned out to be a bonus for me in the camera department and I have a great set of 'different' pics for the album.
Back on Biyadoo the next morning I have to report not much had changed from our last visit (which I am glad about, if they upgrade this little island like so many others it will be just one more out of our price range). I like Biyadhoo as it is, no water villas, all accommodation is equal (that said, like so many before me on Tripadvisor, the rooms could do with a little update - not a great big makeover but just a little bit of paint, replace some cracked tiles, replace mouldy grout etc - someone said they are actually starting that). They were replacing the accomm roofs whilst we were there - no disturbance to guest really and I guess they have to do this in the 'dry monsoon' because believe me in Sept 2010 you would not have wanted them to have been messing about on your roof! The chef's all seemed to be the same (as were some of the waiting staff) and bar staff - load of whom actually remembered us - which was quite lovely - might have been to do with the fact that we (and our group of Biyadhoo-made friends) were often the last ones out of the bar! So, special thanks to the brill bar guys - you were great again and made us feel very welcome - see you again very soon! The food, as said before, is good if not somewhat 'samey'. The soup chef, bread chef and egg chef have to be commended! I loved the salads too and despite the cold (-4) weather back here in Grimsby I am eating salad recipe concoctions taken away from the island.
I used the spa 3 times, all times had a wonderful massage - the girls are just lovely and the whole spa area (including the 'Avatar' Banyan Tree is beautiful). There is some water errosion on some parts of the island (sandbags at the ready!) and there are some (not so pretty) concrete walls - a necessary evil. And yes, there is a boat yard at one end of the island (well they do have to mend them somewhere). But, if you think this might 'offend' you - then simply avoid it - you don't have to pass it to get to beaches, bar or the restaurant - only those 'taking the air' on the round island walk come across it.
This year we were lucky enough to see the Dophins on one of the sunset cruises - oh, excuse me for a moment I have to go a bit 'American' here and say...they were truely awesome! I set my camera to continuous phase and out of around 600 shots managed to get about 12 ok ones - won't be applying to Frozen/Blue Planet as a photographer anytime soon - mind you - when the subject wasn't jumping about constantly my pics are picture-postcard perfect (thanks mum for the new camera!).
All in all a great little island for those of you who want a laid-back and relaxed holiday (there's no out-dressing eachother here). The folks are very friendly and well-behaved (ahem, there is a nation out there that could do with a few lessons in manners though - hawking and spitting really isn't acceptable (or necessary?) on the beaches, the bar sand floor and the walkways!! You know who you are - if you can read English Captin Flem - still at least this time they wern't eating the crabs alive!!)
Special thanks to Ginny & Will and Dee & David for their great and entertaining company. We shall return to brilliant Biyadhoo very soon.
