“fabulous!!”

myself and my partner have just returned from 6 nights in meeru, and i cannot stress how fabulous the place is. It really is paradise. Having read of the overbooking, we were slightly worried when we arrived, but thankfully this was not a problem. We stayed in a jbv 113, and it was lovley, the beach was 10 steps away (yes i counted), the sea was calm and crystal clear, the marine life was spectacular, i could go on and on. I celebrated my 30th whilst on holiday, and the room boy decorated the room beautifully! The room was cleaned every morning and then the bed turned down at night. When we left the room boy made us little animals out of palm tree leaves, which was a lovley thing to do for us.
The food was out of this world, and something different every night. The puddings are to die for so if your watching your figure it may get tempting!! Our waiter for the week was wahhab, and he couldnt help more.
At the bar, the waiters couldnt do enough for you and saleem was always on hand to fill up your glass. On the night of my birthday he made up a table on the beach, decorated with flowers and happy birthday on it, very thoughtfull!
We went to asian wok for dinner one night and it was beautiful. The spa was also perfect too.
I have read a few bad reviews on here and i cannot see how people could compain. The boat transfer took approx 50 mins and was fine, i was a bit aprehensive as im not a fan of boats, but it was fine and we were taken within 15 mins of arriving at the airport. We never had any trouble with mosquitos, ants or cockroaches whilst in the island, but it is a tropical island so there is going to be animals and bugs around! We had a geko that stayed with us in the bathroom for the week, im sure housekeeping would have removed him, but he did no harm, it was quite an experience to have him come out when we went for a shower!! Yes it is warm - again its a tropical island and the temp sits around 30 each day (bliss!!)
My two top tips would be take a high factor (30) sunscreen as the sun is very strong, and take very little shoes, i didnt wear any from i stepped off the boat, untill i stepped back on it! Everywhere is covered in sand, even the restaurants dont bother if you dont have any on.
All in all a perfect holiday on a perfect island.

Room Tip: jbv in the 100s

“Merru - Bit of a marmite island and minging jacuzzies”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012
5
people found this review helpful

ok i will be as honest as i can this was part of a four week holiday including two week in thailand and two week in the maldives Thailand was amazing
So Merru what can i say
island is very pretty never feels busy even though when full ( which is was ) there are probably 1000-1200 people including staff on the island staff are very nice especially waheed and the Kuion rep Marc and the dive guys
white sand clear blue water very little snorkling and low key entertainment
food is good althogh on two weeks it can be a bit repetitive
shop is extortinate 27 dollars for oil
tailor in the shop is very good he fixed the handle on my bag for 3 us dollars
wifi is a rip of 20 dollar for 24 hours or 15 dollars for 2 hours spread out untill used up

my dislike of the Merru began when we moved rooms we had paid around 6700 for two weeks all inclusive In a jacuzzi water villa
We had a jacuzzi water villa the first room we had 721 was fine just as expected
half way through the week we did the cruise which was great its a turkish gullet boat called Gomafulla ( or something ) with en suite cabins
we swam with manta rays turtles and saw dolphins and the crew were lovely and the food was non stop and we had a great time and i highly reccomend it if you can do this

it was when we returned we were told our new room was not ready for 3 hrs after kicking up a fuss our room was immediatly ready - how strange
now this room 714 was a mirror image of the other room however the jacuzzi was minging and i mean minging its was dirty broken with deep dirt ingrained scractches all around the water line, bit like a dirty bath when you get the dirt line except that it was permanent also at the bottom of the jacuzzi there was a deep raised up gash which i cut my foot on as it was jagged edges It was old badly maintained and harldy any power in it you would get more bubble if you farted in it

We have a jacuzzi at home and have had 3 of them over the years so are pretty knowlegable about them basically for those of you that dont know you need to treat them in a similar way to a swimming pool ie check ph level put in various chemicals to get rid of bacteria and sanatise it after you have used it if you dont do this daily then you get a back of germs bacteria ect which even when its emptied is not gone and still in the jacuzzi
however this treatment is not done in any of the jacuzzies in merru they simply empty it and put in bleach tablets which dose not get rid of any germs or bacterias
while i appreciate that maintaining a jaccuzi can be hard work as you get oils, make up sand dirt from a persons body in the tub which even makes the water go murkey ect with the correct chemicals can be hard dealt with easily although its time consuming to do so
however merru cant be bothered to do this so they just empty it each time anyone asks and puts in bleach tablets to give that clean smell
So your getting in someone elses dirty water that hasnt been treated some of the germs you can catch are hot tub rash which is caused by pseudomonas, a type of bacteria that thrives in hot tubs without proper chlorine and pH levels. It causes a skin infection that results in red, itchy bumps and blisters. If a hot tub isn't cleaned properly, you can inhale a bacteria called Mycobacterium avium (M. avium), which belongs to the same class of bacteria that causes tuberculosis (but without being contagious). The bacteria are spewed into the air when the hot tub bubbles rise to the surface and burst. As they evaporate, you may breathe them in, which can cause an infection or allergic reaction that results in cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath, fatigue and tightness in your chest. The condition often resolves, as long as you stop using the hot tub, but can be serious, and even fatal. along with other conjunctivitus, herpes, atheltes foot to name a few

so we complained about the state of it and that its not treated properly and told welll its works -
well we wernt disputing that it worked only that its was not fit for purpose and we wanted to be refunded for not using the jacuzzi
this went on for all of the second week of our holiday Even our rep Marc agreed that it wasnt good and that we were right and took photos but Merru insisited that the jacuzzi was fine to use you have to complain when your there dont wait untill you get home
it was only on our last day that they finally caved in and refunded us 350 us dollars for the week and we had to sign to say that we wouldnt take it further when we got home i dont think it was enough but it paid of our room bill so i accepted it

we lost probably half a day to a day of our holiday with regards to this Meeru addmited to us that they dont treat the jacuzzis properly ( supposedly cos its bad for your skin ) but there customer service leave a lot to be desired
and we wernt the only ones complaining about this either another couples jacuzzi in the beach villas was even worse full up of limescale with a broken cover and just as filthy as ours

So on that point i wouldnt go back unless it was a fabulous deal and last minute and i wouldnt pay for the jacuzzis rooms either
i feel that once they have your money its tough luck If things are not up to scratch. People pay a lot of money to go there and they should get what they paid for some of the cheaper rooms have brand new jacuzzis several of the more expensivie ones like ours didnt yet we paid propably a extra 1k for something that didnt work properly and was disgusting dirty
if they got there customer services attitude right it could be a great place but untill then i will stay away

For what its worth the jacuzzi beach villas are being refurbished and the last 10 are being done - they have the old jaucuzzi in them
they are not exactly on the beach either if your at the top end near the north resturant they you have a fab view of the sea but the further down it goes the less sea view you have there is more vegetation and trees not a major fault but if your expecting uninterupted sea views its totally depenedent on where you are located
i think that the water villas are the best best right on the beach with the water on the steps far better than the jauczzi water villla and wish that i had booked one of those instead
they are also notorious for overbooking as well they can overbook by 10 percent so its worth emailing two weeks before and requesting a specific room or location

sorry for those that love this place its is lovely ( if you get the right price) but im still on the fence with it its lovely pretty place but the customer service is crap and your basically called a liar

Room Tip: if you want quite ie no kids ask for the seven hundred jacuzzi water villas and the high 600 jacuzzi...

“Super Week Relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We spent the last week of January relaxing in this lovely resort. We stayed in a beach jacussi villa eating at the north end of the island. As other reviewers have said this was the better restaurant because of the ambiance and the number of outside tables overlooking the lagoon. The food was excellent, all buffet style, plenty of choice, high quality with very good unobtrusive service. Th house white and red were also good with the rose being a little sweet for our palate - no need to spend money on better wines!

The villa was large and well maintained about 500 yards from the restaurant along a shaded sandy path in the coconut grove which made a nice walk to work up an appetite or shake down a meal. There was a slight downside because ants appeared at night in the outside bathroom, don't forget it is the tropics. These were quickly sorted out by a phone call and some spraying.

For those who like nothing to do there was the very nice infinity pool with plenty of free sunbeds in and out of the shade. This was a feature of the resort because although most villas were occupied the resort didn't feel full. For the more energetic, there were diving trips, snokelling trips or snorkelling off the beach. Also there were sunset and oher cruises.

All in all a great holiday; we will definitely go back there; but for 2 weeks next time

Room Tip: Go for a room which is served by the north island facilities

“Perfect”

My husband and I had read all the reviews and were a little concerned about the over booking situation, however, on arrival we were upgraded to a jacuzzi water villa for the first night so quite happy. We were not happy about signing the disclaimer that they want everyone to sign , not sure how our holiday insurance would be affected!
The following morning we were moved to a jacuzzi beach villa in the 600's which we had previously requested. This was well organised and caused us no disruption. The room was modern, clean and well equipped. We were allocated the Maalan restaurant for the duration, the food and service were excellent, particularly the Maldavian night (curry). We chose to drink mainly in the Pavillian Bar where the service was excellent and the staff very pleasant, efficient and genuine. The overwater spa was a fabulous experince and to be recommended. We booked the Tapanyaki at the Asian Wok which was brilliant, well worth the money. La Goma was also fun, good food, large portions but a bit more expensive. Overall we had a fabulous time and would quite happliy return to Meeru if they extend breakfast to 10.00am!

I throughly enjoyed my week on Meeru! I stayed in a land villa and found the outdoor bathroom amazing! The staff were excellent, the food was beautiful and although it was quiet there was still things 'going on'...I hope to return in the future (when my bank balance permits!!)
