Sun Island- sigh! Have you heard of Love at first sight? I fell in love with Sun Island the minute I stepped off the boat onto the undulating beach. It was the perfect place for my honeymoon. We stayed there for 4 nights and 5 days in 2007. I expected the weather to be humid, but to my pleasant surprise, despite the fact that it was December, it was the same weather that Bangalore enjoys during July-August. We made the booking via a travel agency and everything went like clock-work. Call it the luck of newly-weds, but we were upgraded to a sea plane (remember the tiny plane in Maine pyar kyon kiya –the song I wanna spend the rest of my life with you?) though we were supposed to travel from Mali main airport to Sun Island resort via motor boat. Aah! The beautiful lagoons that we viewed from the clouds are still vivid in my mind’s eye. The sea plane dropped us off around 13 kms from the resort and we stepped into a motor boat arranged for us by the resort.
We stayed in the Delux Beach facing rooms (These are a few yards from the ocean and it feels like a private beach) and it was fantastic. There are recliners on the beach that you can relax in. the best thing about the islands is that they have a policy- There is only one resort on each island. Hence, it is never too crowded and the only people on these resorts are the vacationers and the staff. This made it perfectly safe for us to sit on the recliners, at the very edge of the water, way past midnight. There are taps right outside you room to wash off the sand. The room was spacious and the bathroom even more so. There was even an outdoor shower area.
The resort arranges several activities like shark/sting ray feeding activities, Snorkeling, scuba diving, etc. There was also a “Robinson Crusoe” trip where you get to book a different island all to yourself for the day. ROMANTIC!!!!
The food was average. Vegetarian cuisine left a lot to be desired. The breakfast was quite good but lunch and dinner were a bit disappointing. My husband freaked out on the salads while I gorged on the desserts.
The best thing about the island was the ocean- it was more or less still. One would imagine that the ocean was pretending to be a lake. There are hardly any waves and the water is crystal clear!
Having been to a different resort in the Maldives again last year, I can confidently say that this resort is way better in terms of food and scenic beauty.
