Sun Island- sigh! Have you heard of Love at first sight? I fell in love with Sun Island the minute I stepped off the boat onto the undulating beach. It was the perfect place for my honeymoon. We stayed there for 4 nights and 5 days in 2007. I expected the weather to be humid, but to my pleasant surprise, despite the fact that it was December, it was the same weather that Bangalore enjoys during July-August. We made the booking via a travel agency and everything went like clock-work. Call it the luck of newly-weds, but we were upgraded to a sea plane (remember the tiny plane in Maine pyar kyon kiya –the song I wanna spend the rest of my life with you?) though we were supposed to travel from Mali main airport to Sun Island resort via motor boat. Aah! The beautiful lagoons that we viewed from the clouds are still vivid in my mind’s eye. The sea plane dropped us off around 13 kms from the resort and we stepped into a motor boat arranged for us by the resort.
We stayed in the Delux Beach facing rooms (These are a few yards from the ocean and it feels like a private beach) and it was fantastic. There are recliners on the beach that you can relax in. the best thing about the islands is that they have a policy- There is only one resort on each island. Hence, it is never too crowded and the only people on these resorts are the vacationers and the staff. This made it perfectly safe for us to sit on the recliners, at the very edge of the water, way past midnight. There are taps right outside you room to wash off the sand. The room was spacious and the bathroom even more so. There was even an outdoor shower area.
The resort arranges several activities like shark/sting ray feeding activities, Snorkeling, scuba diving, etc. There was also a “Robinson Crusoe” trip where you get to book a different island all to yourself for the day. ROMANTIC!!!!
The food was average. Vegetarian cuisine left a lot to be desired. The breakfast was quite good but lunch and dinner were a bit disappointing. My husband freaked out on the salads while I gorged on the desserts.
The best thing about the island was the ocean- it was more or less still. One would imagine that the ocean was pretending to be a lake. There are hardly any waves and the water is crystal clear!
Having been to a different resort in the Maldives again last year, I can confidently say that this resort is way better in terms of food and scenic beauty.

“avoid this island”

I have written once before but my review was not published so I will try again. My family and I visited Sun island in April 2011.
Whilst we were on the island an asian worker broke into our room while we were sleeping. I will spare you the details but the police had to be called. He broke in via the outside bathroom door that has a very small bolt on it. I found out today that the Maldivian police have done nothing with the investigation despite us filing a report that included medical evidence. The British police are still pushing them to investigate and i have to give video evidence. Following the attack the staff at sun island treated us very badly. They were not at all sympathetic and could not have cared less. Tompson flew us to another island and then home. They have security on this island. The security guard was nowhere in sight on the night i was attacked. Our room was literally opposite the security guard station. Please do not risk your safety here.

“Very good for the price you pay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Made the booking thru a local travel agency in Male which turned out to be cheaper than online sites

Arrived in the evening at local airport and made a quick journey by bus and speedboat to the island, a magical walk on the bridge to the reception, many forms to fill at reception for all even for children, staff are polite but not cheerfull and very serious.

If you have children make sure you get the nearby bunglows to avoid the long morning walk and connecting bunglows if you have children

We tried the free dividing experience, interesting if you have never done diving before, snorkling is great by italian restaurant, get some bread to attract the fish.

Room Tip: Super Deluxe have an advantage of indoor shower and bigger is size

“Not bad but not wonderfull”

Stayed in April 2011, Was worried about weather, but just one rain for half a day during 10 days of our holidays. Overall very nice and one of the biggest islands. Very spacious rooms but not very new, quite simlpy decorated but very comfortable. Food is not wonderfull but average. Always have something to eat but not a wide choice. Only fruits are available in a high quality and enough quantity. Wine is expensive, we knew that and bought few bottles in Duty Free Dubai. A lot of Russians. Definetely go for superior rooms as they have their own beach. Spa is not very expensive and way much better than I have seen in Mauritius and Seychelles. Overall not the best hotel in Maldives but Maldives themselves are wonderful irrespective of the hotel or anything else. Taking into account the price - this hotel is quite good.

Room Tip: You can choose reef side or lagoon side. Definetely chose superior rooms.

“A very disappointing experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

It is our second trip to the MAldives, the first was at Reethi Beach and everything was wonderful: the beach, the diving, the bungalow, the food and the guests were very civilized. We opted this time for Sun Island, just to experience another place, and forked out significant more money this time for this "luxury" place. Then our nightmare began......
The deluxe bungalow are just surreal: never seen so much bad taste at once (even motels at the edge of a motorways are more stylish). The furniture is old and battered, the air conditioning did not work (and the staff could not care less), the ceiling fan made noise like a jumbo and the window was sealed. The tiny and rusty shower was outside, giving more a sense of poverty rather than exotic charm.
Just outside the bungalow there was some unkept vegetation and I once had the ill idea to sit outside to read a book, just to run away after 30 min all covered of insects bites (despite the insect repellent). All afternoon some heavy work by tractor is carried out, so there is a horrible noise for at least 4 hours each day. Since they use minivans to carry stuff around the island smells of diesel.

The restaurant is a true nightmare and it looks like the canteen of a busy factory: the food is covered of flies and there is a poor selection of some pasta with tomato sauce (canteen style) and other uninteresting dishes. The only fish is served is cooked in small pieces and surely comes from a tin or frozen. Even the salad bar looks more like MacDonald than a real restaurant. The guests are however the worst: about 1000 people mainly russians and very rude, piling food on their plates like there is no tomorrow, and elbowing to get access to the best pieces. The waiter was equally rude and you had to stand up and go to him to ask for some beverage. Needless to say, any extra (wine or beer or coffee etc) is very expensive.

The island is massive and they rent some old bikes (at 4USD/day). Everything is paved and most women trot around in six-inches heels (!!!). At the other resort we went around bare foot and it was really magic, for one week to forget about shoes and dressing in a suit and tie....

The worst and most disappointing of all is however the beach and the sea: under a small coat of white sand there is the brown sand excavated from a nearby island, to increase the size of the natural beach. The sea around the island is all dead and the island reef is dead. The only fishes visible around the island are around the restaurant, just because the are constantly fed. Snorkeling is a waste of time as there is nothing to see. We are both divers and the diving was also very disappointing: the rented equipment is expensive (much more than all other islands we have ever visited) and badly maintained (jeopardizing safety). The boat excursions are uninteresting, as nearby there is a big airport and another island used for excavations, thus the visibility is poor and most of the corals are dead. The diving groups are very large (9-10) and of very mixed capability (including some PADI students) all headed by a SINGLE instructor. Appalling!!

The organization is also poor: weak up at 4.30am to reach Male (30 min away) even though our flight was at 12noon.

All in all, this was a surreal experience: we could not believe that in the Maldives there could be such ugly place (and not cheap at all) and we were happy to come back home
I would recommend this island to my worst enemy
