“Most amazing place on earth.”

My wife and I have just returned from a most relaxing holiday at The W Retreat in the Maldives. It is difficult to describe just how amazing this resort is without going there to see for yourself. The lounge at the sea plane waiting area was clean and tidy and had free drinks which were well needed after the long flight from the UK. The sea plane ride was a fun experience and was approx 20 mins across the amazing blue seas. When the plane arrived at the resort we were waved in by the manager and staff. All of the staff were extremely friendly and called us by name on all occasions. We stayed in a beach retreat (no.117) and I mention the number because it had a very large section of beach whereas we noticed that some of the other beach retreats only had small sections and when the tide was in it would have been difficult to use the sunbeds. The retreat was extremely clean and tidy and spacious. The "sweet spot" was right outside our retreat and this was great because any time we wanted free ice cream or soft drinks it was very near to us. The food in the restaurants was excellent and it was nice to eat in "Fire" as it was on the beach. Breakfast was excellent as expected in a 5 star resort with a great choice and range of food available. The only small criticism that we had is that they state "free wi-fi throughout the resort" - yes it's free (which is great seeing as you are in the middle of nowhere) but the signal was very weak in the retreat (villa) and did not reach to the deck area. There was no wi-fi in the restaurants at all. There was however a good signal in the welcome lounge. Please can this be extended to everywhere on the island. We had a very relaxing time and the weather was excellent - 30 degrees every day and the sea was warm. There are so many islands to choose from but we will definitely come back to The W Retreat in the future.

Beautiful place! very nice hotel, if i really have to find a negative point is that one of the 3 restaurants (the only one open all day and a la carte) was quiet bad.
A lot of activities, but quiet overpriced foe what they were,
For the rest, A paradise!

“Cant expect anything better”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Writing this review while we are in the resort, its our 3rd day here. We are on our honeymoon, staying here couple of more days,so far, everything has been amaging. This is an heaven on earth, this might not be a true complement about the W retreat itself as Maldives is already beautiful, but everything else is also mind blowing. They call it Whatever Whenever service, this is truely a whatever whenever experience. The service us 24/7, room gets cleaned everytime you step out of the room!! Food is awsome, a lot of different choices, even they are happy to make you something not on their menu!! We were sun bathing after a swim, someone came with fruits without asking for it !! They have sweet spot where you can get free drinks and iceceeam anytime, and they keep on refilling it. The rooms are stunning and you have all you can think about. We are staying in a ocean oasis room with plunge pool. Anyway, to finish it off, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a honeymoon place...and ready to experience Whatever Whenever

Pros- extreme privacy, wouldn't even know the resort had other guests
Beautiful view, grounds, and villas
snorkeling right off our private deck- with reef sharks and sea turtles
Excellent breakfast buffet, great music
Excellent service staff
Cons- very rude manager. He made the rounds to all dining guests during dinner and snubbed us every single night- we assume bc we were the only guests there in our 20's. No excuse- at a 5 star resort ALL guests deserve respect
While breakfast was amazing, dinner was so-so.

Room Tip: Definitely split your time between an over-water villa and a beach villa. Over-water for the experie...

Hello Justin,

Thanks for staying with us back in March 2011 .. it's great to read that you enjoyed your W experience. I agree with you - seeing the turtles while snorkeling is just wonderful.

Justin, I do not recall snubbing you during your stay - and I apologize that it feels that way to you.

I hope that your travels bring you back to W Maldives again in the near future and I have the opportunity of meeting you personally.

Again, thanks for choosing to stay at W Maldives.

Regards, Laurens.

“The epitom of class and luxury - No one can beat this resort in Maldives”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

My wife and I spent 5 nights at the W retreat Maldives. We travel all around the world in 5 stars hotels and palaces. We really pay attention to details in accomodations, food, activities and service.

The verdict is speechless : this resort is definitely the epitom of class and luxury in a beautiful spot.

Welcome : Almost 15 people were waiting for us at the seaplane jetty. They expressed a class and warm welcome. Fresh towel, welcome drink, lounge style music played by a trendy DJ... From this place of the resort (jetty) you quickly understand the staff will take care of you during all your stay. A bugy drove us to our retreat

Accomodation : We stayed 3 nights in a Beach Bungalow and 2 nights in an Overwater Bungalow with Lagoon view. The beach bungalow offers a robinson crusoe experience in 185 square meters. Living room's furnishing had both local and design influences and was equipped with high tech amenities (bose 5.1 system, plasma TV...). Bathroom was located at the rear side of the villa. It was wide and had an open space bringing nature and charm. A large terrace including a solarium, a private pool with jaccuzi, and dining table and a barbecue machine was adjacent to the living room. It offered privacy thanks to the presence of many palm or exotic trees all around the villa. A private step led to the upper side of the villa, offering space to relax on a balancing chair while watching the lagoon, a private bar and also great music. A small lane gave an access to a "private" beach with a pristine lagoon and immaculate white sand. All these ingredients make you live and spend unforgettable moments in paradise.
The Lagoon villa experience was different. Decoration was almost the same, except for the terrace that was larger and there was no upper floor. On this terrace, you live in perfect harmony with the ocean in a quiet atmosphere. We enjoyed both beach and lagoon villas that represent the nec plus ultra in terms of luxury, style, charm and feelings.

Food : Before arriving at the resort, we mentionned that we had food restrictions. This was respected every time we had breakfast or dined at any restaurant. The chef Leonie defined and proposed a special menu for us at the Christmas Eve dinner. The customized menu was printed on a card, especially for us.
Food was delicious and original. We always had this question in mind : how do they manage to get rare and particular ingredients on this deserted island ? We come from France and can testify many palace restaurants abroad have difficulties to propose quality food with fresh and rare ingredients. That was not the case for W retreat Maldives where food was a real delight. A special dedicace to Farouk for his impressive fresh fruit station

Activities : There's always something to do at this resort : water ski, catamaran, diving, scuba diving, parasailing, yoga, spa, fitness... Whatever the activity, a high level of service was provided. For example, on the diving boat, just after coming back from water, the staff gave you a towel, washed you mask, proposed you a fruit plate....

As a summary, we can easily say that W Retreat Maldives is definitely one of the best island resort the world has to offer. A great spot evoking paradise, uncompromised level of service with smile and attention, a trendy and glamour atmosphere, great food... all the ingredients that make you spend unforgettable moments inscribed in your memory forever.

Possible improvements : an ipad / ipod / iphone dock connected to the Bose system would be very much appreciated, better advices at the diving center for people looking for big species (we did not see any shark or manta ray in 2 dives...)

For the rest, you can trust me, this resort is second to none. All the lights representing the resort's attributes are green. It's a real jewel on the indian ocean.
