“Great Escape”

Very relaxing place to stay to escape the modern world.  The staff were all extremely hospitable, friendly, and Lawrence was able to drive us out to the starting point of various walks/hikes and nearby restaurants.  Taxis were easily arranged for trips into Kuching - we were always quite lucky that all our taxis back from Kuching knew of the Village House.

We found the pool plenty large enough (we're not training for the Olympics), and with it's ledge close to the bar it was getting good use day and night.  The rooms (aside from the suites) are air-conditioned, clean, simple, nearly all overlook the pool, no wardrobe just a clothes stand, sarongs provided, bathrooms were clean, large and bright.

There is wifi in the common areas near the bar.  If you need things like TVs and mini-bars you will need to book one of the suites.  We spent most of our time around the pool with a book and a glass of wine, or out exploring some of the jungle trails.  Don't forget some lemongrass bug spray.

Definitely try the Taste of Borneo dinner - multiple courses by their chef, menu is seasonal, fresh from the market that day.  The Taste of Borneo was a great experience, not short of a five star meal.  In general all the food provided (including breakfast) was excellent, especially the pancakes and local layer cakes.

“Lovely small hotel in the middle of nowhere!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

We stayed here 3 nights and had a perfect stay! Our room was very spacious (suite) with balcony and tv. I think a small room is also ok. Pool is small but nice and clean. Restaurant serves nice food (European and Asian). Laurence the manager is also nice but we want to give special compliments to "Zin". She is one of the girls who is taking care of everything: one moment she is cleaning the rooms, pool etc. and the other moment serving lunch or dinner and always with a smile! Hope they take care of her. This place is a modern paradise!

“Great- very friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011 via mobile

Stayed during the rainforest fest and really enjoyed ourselves. Went with a group and Donald and marina really looked after us. Very flexible with transport to he festival etc. Great atmosphere as all the guests were up for the festival. Food is good too. Rooms a bit small bug honestly we were only in them to sleep 5 hours a night. Festival was excellent in terms of music and atmosphere as was Kuching. Hotel only added to the experience. Would definately try to stay again for the festival next yr.

“In the middle of nowhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

It is an elegant, but very small property. Rooms, swimming pool and communal sitting areas are very small, so you feel cramped and observed in every movement you do.
But the main problem is that you are in the middle of NOWHERE. Damai beach is not a touristical area, is a private touristical resort far 10km, where you cannot swim in the sea because it is infested with stingrays and jellyfishes. The beach close to the Village House is a dangerous and deserted swamp. Sambudong, the village far another 5-6 km, is not interesting at all. So, after you have had those short trips (booking the shuttle) you end up being locked up like in a prison, reading your books in a cramped space. Furtherly, you rest is seriously disturbed every night by pool cleaning , and sometimes by noise from the small bar.
All this at the cost of around Usa 90 a day, which is totally and completely ridicolous and outrageous, because with the same amount you get the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
The only reason to get to the Village House is to climb the Gunung Sambudong mountain, but the trail is dangerous (snakes and wild animals) and, of course, Mount Kinabalu in another planet.
