“Overrated!”

The resort itself is very nice, the grounds kept very well. However, the water was very dirty around the resort, with rubbish (eg plastic bags, used hangbag, chips packets etc) everywhere around the lagoon and underneath the bungalows. We were told it's monsoon season hence the rubbish but it did not look very appearing, given the amount of staffs and price you pay for the room, you could think someone would try to clean it, for this reason we did not swim in the water even though we specially booked a room where we can get directly access to the sea.

The staffs were friendly, however they do not seem very experienced. I cut my foot but no one offered to help, even though they saw I was bleeding. Recommend checking out the MERC, we also went for the jungle trekking which was good, the guide was very friendly and helpful.

The food at the resort was average. The seafood restaurant was nice but food at the resort was very over priced. The prices for mini bar drinks in the room costed more than the Hyatt Regency in KK.

I dont think we will return to this resort, given the price we paid for this place, we have definitely stayed at nicer resort with more personal touch and professional service.

“Pleasant place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

Its a bit of a hassle to get there..from airport to Jesselton Point. Make sure you re confirm your airport pick up. After that, the price you pay kicks in..lovely service from Jesselton to Gayana. Picture perfect, no fake marbles, not bus load of tourists, no screaming kids..just friendly people greeting you. No forms to fill in, you get your room keys in no time (we paid in advance back home). Immediately, the blue emerald clear water invites you to dive in! Which we did...from our own balcony. Pity we can't kayak far to the other islands. Just enjoy being here. Staffs are wonderfully helpful and friendly. Rooms are great, view are magical. A must go is the MERC..marine eco research centre..where you get to see giant clams. Envy the marine biologist there, these are the people who should get world recognition..they are saving the earth..they got our votes many times over.. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Ocean view..bit deep though to plunge into the sea..

“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

Had another great stay at this little slice of heaven. Quickly how time flies since last visit but was pleasantly surprised by the improvements of the facilities. The waters and surroundings were just as spectacular as I last left them. Quality of food , as usual, was excellent though not cheap. A pleasant patch of clear weather made the trip all the more memorable.

Room Tip: Splurge on Palm Villas !

“Ensure you know what room you are booking!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

After booking what we thought were the huts over the ocean; we arrived at paradise and were very disappointed with our "lagoon view" villa. The hotel staff were all amazingly friendly and Thomas the General Manager was able to sort us out and move us to the room we thought we had booked; which was in fact a "ocean view". Once moved, all was beyond fantastic. Highly recommend the resort; located on a remote island a convenient boat shuttle away from the city; it was absolute paradise! The food was amazing, the service was incredible and the "ocean view" or better rooms were a perfect!
..

Room Tip: Make sure you get an "ocean view" room; lagoon view are not much of a view

“"must try" in Kota Kinabalu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

We finished our trip in Kota Kinabalu with one night in Gayana resort.
The staff was waiting for us in pier, always have smile.
Once arrived in this island, it's so beautiful, the houses on stilts so charming.
It was end of low season, so i saw only 3 couples that day there.
There is 44 rooms, we didn't take the rooms with stair to go in the sea, and it was good choose because many dangerous jelly fish every where and also the water wasn't clean, plastic bottle or plastic candy.I think it the only bad point of this hotel.
Also the restaurant Macak is good but a bit expensive, around R700 the meal for 2 people + 2 glass of wine. So the check out bill was around R1800, its expensive for only one night.
I recommend this hotel if you want try Kota Kinabalu.
