Borneo Backpackers is conveniently located in downtown KK, walking distance from restaurants, the markets, and long distance bus station to Mt. Kinabalu. Its filled with an international crowd (including Malaysians:), mostly researching and preparing forms for their hike up Mt. Kinabalu or limping around after. The dorms (where we stayed) and bathrooms were super clean, the common area is filled with couches, computers, and information on tourist attractions all over Borneo, and they offer the standard breakfast of toast with tea (from Sabah, really good) or coffee. The staff is super helpful and very friendly and they sell the cheapest beer in town (Rn 6 for a can of Tiger) and the most expensive laundry service (Rn10 per kilo). There is also a decent restaurant below, operated by the same owners, that serves delicious chicken curry and an interesting herbal chicken soup.
Best of all, BB recycles and has free filtered water available, reducing the mountain of plastic bottles we tourists produce.
