“pleasant staff....mediocre hotel.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

Holiday..year end getaway. Thought we pamper ourselves this time. Booked in advance..paid in advance, took the risk after reading mixed reviews in Tripadvisor. Coming from Gayana Eco Resort (see separate review), we were a bit apprehensive. Passed by Novotel, where we stayed the last time. Grand Borneo...nothing grand there. Was Mercure before...M for mediocre? Check in was ok..dirty corridor to the rooms, never been vacumm? Room was s-m-a-l-l so if you're big, get the suite. Both rooms toilet door are busted, the room door has evidence its been kicked in. Ok, we had the mountain view. Breakfast is so so..nothing fancy...packed. Hotel management needs to be FIRM...NO DURIANS or other strong smelling fruits taken to guests rooms. Its enough to drive you nuts! Not worth the price.

Room Tip: Get the suites...or else stay next door, Novotel.

“Nice but boring after a week”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

I was staying for a conference with the local government for a week so I got the government rate and it was just fair. It was a busy conference and the weather that was awful so I was forced to stay indoor for a week. The service was ok, the food was good, the business conference was great, the shopping mall has variety shops and restaurants. It was nice but boring.
The hotel just need more entertainment facilities, such as spa, better sport facilities, city tour transport or maybe clubs.

Room Tip: There was a pool of water under the sink when I check in. They cleaned it up and tell me all I have...

“Good service lousy hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

Stayed for 3 nights in Dec 11 with kids. the first night, the aircon was out of order and we were told to wait for 30 mins. nevermind. second night same aircon problem and this time waited for 1hr 30 mins to be fixed and after repeated calls. the next morning, aircon died again. Some of the lights in the rooms didn't work too. Asked for room to be replaced and was instead given a smoking floor. Was given another room only by late afternoon. The porter who was suppose to assist in moving our luggage to the replacement room did not turn up - i wasn't going to waste my holiday waiting in a room without aircon. Move all my luggage to the new room myself. breakfast food was same for the 3 days we stayed and was nothing to shout about. might have been a better idea to eat in the mall instead. gym was spacious as there was little equipment. two treadmill, one strider, one cycling machine and one weights machine. That's all. indoor pool was cold most of the time and water appeared murky. Someone got trapped in the lift when we were staying there too. Room walls were very thin. Could here what the neighbours were talking about, when they shower, blew their hair etc. Good if you are a stalker.

Staff were generally friendly and helpful (which was a relief given the state of the hotel rooms and facilities). Proximity to the mall was good as well. good shopping. good food.

Would probably not stay here again unless there is improvements made to the rooms. Losy experience overall staying in a hotel room with aircon breaking down every so often.

“Terrible venue for conference”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011 via mobile

Room are clean but space limited. Great for shopping.
Terrible experience of having conference at ball room, the rooms are not sound proof as we able to heard loud noise from other function carrying out next door. PA system really bad, some mic sounds robotic and keep having feedback to the sounds system.

“A Grand Borneo Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

This hotel became my business center for 2 weeks and surprisingly suit my utmost convenience. Along with its convenient location, the hotel also offers a wide range of services and facilities to the guests.

The hotel staff are by far the nicest I have encountered since I can remember.

I loved the room, the rooms are small but were perfect for what we were happy with.

Wide variety of local and western food. Buffet line was satisfying. Express lunch set was a nice touch.

A thoroughly enjoyable stay - the very warm, friendly and inviting service is definitely the most positive aspect of this hotel. It is not close to the city center, but is an interesting walk through the shopping mall to get and is very reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the area.

Room Tip: Deluxe room. Facing Mount Kinabalu. Also, glass wall separating bathroom and bedroom always classy t...
