“Not at all what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We booed Travellers Home because of good critics, but we were actually very disapointed.
Guesthouse is about 3 km away from the river and the village, which is not aproblem, because there is a shutlle available for each activity you have. If they don't forget you of course, what happened to us. This was rather late, at around ten in the evening, so no one wanted to call the guesthouse for us, we didn't have the phone... At the end we managed to come back, it was late, but still, this was the least of our problem.
We booked a chalet. The pictures on the internet are very nice, but when we came in, what a surprise. I am sure the bathroom hasn't been cleaned properly, the bed sheets looked very suspicious, the floor was dirty, the light on the veranda didn't have a bulp, there were ants everywhere (ok, it's a jungle, we can accept this) and of course there was also a cocroache, what we can not accept even if it is a jungle. Not to mentioned, that there was no warm water and of course noone cleaned the room in the morning, but we didn;t even ecpect this.
Breakfast and dinner are included in the price. Breakfast is very poor, just toast, butter, jam and some cornflakes. Dinner was ok, but nothing special and it's not at all like it is said, that all guest are sitting and eating together with the family. It's just the guest that they are sitting together, which is also good.
Cofee, tea and soft drinks are free of charge and they sell beer, which is quite difficult to get over there.
Internet din't work for the whole stay and it didn't seem they care about it or that they are gonna do something about it.
I didn't have a feelling, that someone from people working there is an experienced guide or that they wanna give us some good advice.
All in all, we survived, but I would't go there again and certainly I don't recommend the place. It's quite bad, it certainl isn't what it said about it and for what you get it is much to expansive.

“Dirty, mouldy place - stay away from Traveller's home!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We choose it according to many positive reviews: it was very disappointing. Our cabin was in miserable conditions: a deep smell of mould greeted us when we entered the room, the linen may have bean clean but I'm not sure, as everything was smelling musty. There were only two worn-out towels, one for each of us. The bathroom was DIRTY - pee stains (!) and hairs from the previous guests on the toilet, a big mould stain on the shower wall. BTW, the shower had no door, so everything in the bathroom was wet when we used it. No place to put stuff anywhere in the room, except the floor and two small bedside tables. The air con was noisy but we could not stay in without it, the room got hot in few minutes so we had to put earplugs on to sleep.
Dinner is served in the main building, on big tables so all the guests eat together - no time flexibility, we were told it was served strictly at 7.30PM. We had boiled rice, plain vegetables, some chicken - mostly bones, I must say - and some fish-balls that I didn't trust at all. Insects were falling on the table during the dinner.
Breakfast was just basic, coffee or tea, bread slices, some cereals, two pots of jam used by all the guests, not very hygienic. The breakfast table was outside, and we were bothered by flies and mosquitoes all the time. And, there was an hair in my mug.
The day we arrived, the girl at the reception didn't almost speak, was unsmiling and the atmosphere was not friendly at all. The day after, there was another lady and she was nicer. But the place was so ugly, that we decided to leave one day earlier. I would never ever stay there anymore, and do not recommend this place to anybody.

“Just lovely - but don't expect that the swimming pool is for swimming in....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

Travellers' Home is a great family and backpackers' inn just next door (and across the river) from Taman Negara. Although probably a little more expensive than the average backpackers, especially the family chalets, this inn provides excellent service in what is basically right in the middle of Malaysia's premier forest. Travelling as a family the simply furnished chalets were fine, and the central kitchen, that we were allowed to access was a godsend. Meals offered were good, a few options each night for night. And they allowed me to make sandwiches for one son who wasn't feeling that good.

Best of all was the friendly owner and his family, who assisted with our tours, onward transportation for our friends, and when a night safari was booked out, took us out personally for a night-time walk to discover the scorpions and other insects that co-habit the environs of Travellers' Home. Our kids were enthralled.

Travellers' Home is not located right in the middle of the kampung so you are reliant on their vehicles to get back and forth to the river (although those without families could probably walk there in 15 minutes or so).
Clearly, the expansion plans for Travellers' Home have hit a snag. The half-built swimming pool (now fish pond) and extensions stand testament to that. But still, the quiet grounds and gardens of Travellers' Home to me seem perfect as they are....

Room Tip: A single or double family chalet - away from the main house - are a good choice

“Wanted to stay here, but booking process and communication problems prevented it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

We really wanted to stay at this homestay, as it had been highly recommended in travel guides etc, but communication problems and the unhelpful attitude of staff (at least my perception) prevented us making a booking. It is probably a lovely place once you've managed to make a booking, so the owners should consider looking into that.

I tried booking a 3n/2d package via the booking form on their homepage, but never got a reply back. So sent an email to the address listed on their homepage a week later, and only got an autoreply saying that the email address wasn't monitored due to some reorganization, advising me to send emails to another address.

Did that, got a reply back from the email address that was unmonitored, then to my reply only got a replay back when I copied in the other email address once more. This went back and forth a bit. When we were ready to book, I was asked to make a deposit in RM to their bank account. As none of my banks offered transfers in Malaysian Ringgit, I sent back an email asking whether any other means of making the deposit were possible, e.g. in another currency. Also asked for the full address as my bank required that for making an international transfer.

I never got a reply back to my questions, neither to the follow-up email I sent a week later. So we ended up looking for another accomodation and stayed at the Mutiara resort. We never had any similar problems with reservations / deposits / communication with any other accomodation on our trip. I would have really liked to stay here, but the poor communication didn't make it possible.

“Excellent service-but for the transfert they have to work on-, quiet place, simple and nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

Jack, the manager is a real plus to this simple but nice place and helps you organise your stay in beautiful Taman Negara, a stay that should last at least 2 days, meaning 3 nights (since it takes you 2.30 hours to reach the place by boat, quite q unique experience).
The family chalets are simple and basic, no great furniture but ok. Dinners as well as lunches are again simple but good while the dinner taken at candle light with the other guests is good and allows you to discuss the day's adventures.
The only but real weakpoint was our arrival where the driver let us carry our heavy luggage without even offering his help: you should definitely insist if you do have substantial luggage to have somebody from their organisation to come and fetch you at the boat jetty AND NOT 500 meters further at the bus stop witch with young children and due to the many stones on the road can be mostly unpleasant: we were fortunate enough to have a driver from competing rain forest lodge who kindly offered to put our luggage on his 4x4....
