having booked an early flight out of Langkawi, I decided to stay at a hotel close to the airport. In Langkawi, Hotel Helang is the closest you can get - just 8 minutes walk. My expectations about this hotel were surpassed. The staff exhibited a high level of professionalism, and the hotel room was large but not as well furnished as I would have loved. A real winner is the bath - jacuzzi style in the top floor deluxe room, At $65/night, this is without doubt a lovely place to stay in Langkaw. A truly fast hi speed internet is available at a cost of less than 4 dollars/ nighti. Of course, for a true five star experience you can always stay at the Four Seasons hotel at 10 times the cost of this hotel!

I booked a family package from the hotel in September 2011 to celebrate New Year in Langkawi. The package was inclusive of 3D/2N (31 dec 2011-2 Jan 2012), car rental throughout the stay and one steamboat dinner for 4 of us. We arrived in Langkawi on 30 Dec night and spent the night in another hotel. Because of that, on 31 Dec, we came around 11am to leave our luggage (since check-in time was@2pm) and took our rental car. We waited for 1 hour before we got the car. When we came back to the hotel @7pm, we just took our luggage and went straight up to our room.

When I unlocked the door, I saw luggage and towel strewn all over the place! We have been given other people's room! Furiously, we went down to the receptionist and questioned them on their mistake. The receptionist was frowning as he was confirmed the room was under my name. Waited for another 15minutes before we given another room.

The room was right at the end and was far from the lift. When we went into the room, the floor was dusty and dirty. There were powder on the floor, smelly room and the beds were not made properly as if somebody just lay down on it. Tired of going down and short of time (we plan to go out to Pantai cenang to watch the fireworks), i called and requested another room. By that time, I scolded and on the edge of yelling to the receptionist of his stupidity. Waited for another 20 minutes, came 1 porter guy with the room key.

Our nightmare did not end there. We were supposed to have the steam boat dinner on our 2nd night but unfortunately when asked, the receptionist told us that no steamboat dinner and asked us to take the buffet dinner provided. We were very furious and called the manager to speak to. The manager quickly apologise and said that it has been prepared. We took the oppurtunity to lodge our complaints and dissatisfaction regarding yesterday's mistake. Waited another 20 minutes for the table to be set-up.

The steamboat was not fresh at all, the buffet dinner was lousy (had a look on the food), so did know which one would be better. The place has mosquitoes at night and was very stuffy. The fan was dusty.

The hotel was under renovation so the kiddy pool and kid's room were closed. The lobby was ok but please do not stay here as this hotel is far from eating place. The only reason we booked here was the car rental. Stay at cenang or any other hotel except for this!

We had recently stayed at Berjaya and rebak so this was a one night stay close to the airport. It was sooo quiet compared to rebak which had planes flying over all day. The place was empty and I felt sorry for the staff as they were so nice but outnumbered guests. They have a free shuttle to the beach and the dinner choice was excellent. We were amazed at the value and the pictures make it look far worse so the management should change them as it is a lovely hotel. If we had known we would have stayed here instead of rebak and paid 200 pounds a night less!

I stayed here for two nights (not consecutively) during my stay in Langkawi, and both rooms were great. Very spacious, comfortable beds and pillows, good functioning air conditioning, and a bathroom with had both a shower room and a bath with shower. The whole hotel was spacious and comfortable, and it's location right next to the hotel was quite practical. Some may prefer to be near the beach, but I preferred the assurance of a quiet night's rest, which is exactly what I got.
The staff was friendly, I appreciated the option to extend the check-out time as well. My complaints are only two:
1. I needed to print out my boarding pass for my flight but their internet/computer desk isn't equipped with a printer; and
2. The food was pretty bad, in my opinion. At dinner the choices were limited, and I found flies flying on and around the fruit (the best part of dinner, in my opinion). The breakfast was marginally better, but among the breakfast options were the leftovers for dinner, which I wasn't impressed with at all. The waffle and omlette stand was enticing, until I found that the waffles tasted like omlettes. I stuck to toast.

Still, for its location and facilities I would certainly return here, especially as they're in the middle of a refurbishment. I just wouldn't eat here.
