The good:
- Holiday Villa is on the perfect spot! Close to many wonderful restaurants (Sheela's, top-notch Indian restaurant Sagar, really cheap, friendly and marvellous Chinese restaurant Deng Long - just to mention few) money exchange just accross the streat (better exchange rate than at the hotel) and few minimarts (the other with alcohol, Happy Souvenir, and the other without, T-shoppe)
- The beach is so beautiful, so peaceful and so perfect
- The pool is also wonderful - even though people reserve sunbeds, there were always free beds available
- Taxi available 24/7 from the hotel. For 100RM you can hire a taxi for 4 hours.
The average:
- Rooms. We had a Deluxe room and were pleased with it. It is however nothing special and definitely no deluxe. Decor is outdated, but didn't bother us at all. It was rather charming that way. I did rate sleeping quality excellent, because we sleep with earplugs on :)
- Breakfast. You get yor stomach full, but there is not much variety. On week two you start gradually getting bored with it.
- Service. Staff members are smiling - yes. Staff members answer your questions - yes. BUT they have no service attitude. That has nothing to do with the staff, but has to do with the whole hotel chain, which doesn't give any room for its staff to be more service-oriented.
The dissappointments (which are not so serious, but somethings to be improved):
- our safety box broke down on our 5th day. We were at the hotel for 2 weeks, but after the box broke down, it wasn't fixed at all. About 5 different people came to take a look at it, but it was never repaired.
- the hotel chain itself - I got so frustrated because this hotel has so much potential, but doesn't use it. This message is for the hotel chain owners:
- please make a marketing survey what customers really want. There were 4 restaurants almost empty all the time, because the hotel has priced themselves out of the market! Prices are not competitive at all compared to ALL the pentiful restaurants accross the street. Food cost 4 times more in the hotel. I felt that the chain is just happy about those few odd persons eating at the resort.
- pool bar was unused. Service was 0, which I do understand because the prices at the pool bar were fixed - and they were charged straight to the room tab. Tipping culture is nonexistent so the staff has no desire to serve people. They are smiling and are nice however.
- "shops" - there were jewellery/souvenir counter and a counter for cakes. In two weeks I saw one lady looking at the counters (a customer). There were some staff members standing behind the counters, but they looked bored and just stood there. What comes to the cake counter - the same lemon cake was there for the whole 2 weeks!
- programme: music, dance + barbeque evenings on Saturdays. We didn't participate, because as said, the hotel clearly has outpriced itself. You can eat with the same price elsewhere really fancily or more than once.
- the hotel could be 4 stars as they have rated at some scale, but only by fixing these things first. The whole potential of the hotel goes out of the window and have to say, a lot of potential revenue as well!
My criticism goes straight to the hotel chain, not the staff members at Holiday Villa Langkawi. I would choose the same hotel again, because of those wonderful features I mentioned earlier.
