Nothing pretentious about this place. Rooms have air-con, separate lavatory/shower, local TV, comfortable beds. Towels etc provided. Reception extremely helpful. No lift, so higher floors can be a problem with heavy luggage. Excellent price (around 70 MYR for room for 4, I seem to remember, around £15 Sterling). Vital note - well-priced choice of excellent cold beer, cheap breakfasts and snacks. Has a nice local feel to it, and the street in which it is based has a good mixture of shops and eateries.
Its free wi-fi worked perfectly and connectioins were quick.
People knock Mersing as a "passing through" place, but it is a thoroughly pleasant and vibrant Malaysian town.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. This place didn't even get a mention in the "Rough Guide" yet a local friend chose this for us as the best value in town, and I agree with his judgement. Steve Riches, Northampton, UK.

We stayed for two nights in the Embassy Hotel in Mersing. It's nice but basic. We would recommend it for backpackers or midrange travellers. They offer aircon and fan rooms. We had a aircon room with TV and attached bathroom, the price was 55 MYR per night. The rooms are really big and clean, the bed is comfortable and you have a good sleep. The only negative point to mention is, if you have a room facing the street than you have some noises, but just slightly. The location is really good, you walk for about 10 minutes to the pier and about 5 minutes to the busstation. Shops and restaurants are just in the front of the building. The Embassy Hotel has a little restaurant and they serve drinks and breakfast. There is free wi-fi available. The stuff was really friendly and helpful.

The rooms are nothing special, accept that they are clean and near the busstation. So good for an overnight stay. Staff is friendly and helpfull. The restaurant downstairs is good/ cheap and has all kinds of beer.

We stayed one night in Mersing after coming back from Tioman Island. Mersing is a good place to stay for a night or two but beyond that may not be very entertaining. Good to get groceries, check emails, etc but not much to do.

The hotel was a good deal for 55RM for a night. We did unfortunately have a window facing the street though so it was rather loud - I think they have a kareoke bar nearby or something maybe. But the room was nice and big. The a/c worked well and you were really close to everything you would need in town. There was a TV and the bed was comfortable enough.

The girl who checked us in was very helpful and the guy who worked another time was not quite as helpful but he tried. We walked to the bus station from the Embassy in about ten minutes I'd say. It's also about ten mintues from the docks where the boats come and go to Tioman.

Great place to stay after being in a terrible bungalow in Salang for the 4 nights prior.
