We stayed at Samburu Intrepids 2 nights and despite the first impression of a quite “wild” camp , we found it absolutely nice.
We landed in the Buffalo springs park which is connected to Samburu but it took us almost 2 hours drive to get to the camp because we were told that , due to the flooding of the past weeks, the bridge linking Buffalo springs and Samburu collapsed . Anyway in Buffalo spring we could see 3 out of the Samburu five: the Grevy zebra, the Reticulated giraffe and the Oryx. Once we arrived in Samburu we saw the other 2 : the blue Ostrich and the Gerenuk. We also saw a leopard and many elephants crossing the river.
Compared to Masai Mara ( which we visited after that ), Samburu has fewer animals but
the landscape is worth seeing : it is mainly hilly, some of the hills are quite high, there is a mountain at the back, with a few plain areas in between and quite a lot of bush : the variety of views is very nice
The camp is situated in the bush but with a stunning view of Ewaso River and all the tents overlook it ; nature around the camp and the tents is savage and in the night you can hear baboons and elephants : actually they seem to be just outside your tent! The camp is fenced and this made me a little bit more confident but I certainly wouldn’t have dared out of the tent at night!!
We have been in Africa many times and this was the first time we slept in a tent and I must say that I was quite worried about it: on the contrary the tent was really very comfortable and a very clean .and actually it was rather a room with wooden floor , 2 twin poster beds with net , a separate toilet, quite a big shower and 2 washbasins, a desk and a beautiful veranda with chairs and table .We couldn’t expect more .
We found a very caring staff always smiling and ready to help you: we had a problem with our mobile and they did their best to help us , finally succeeding . The food was nice too.
We appreciated especially the light breakfast served in our tent as our attendant woke us up early in the morning before our first safari. Although we prefer smaller camps, Samburu Intrepids proved to give us a good privacy and it was less crowed than its partner Mara Intrepids -even though they are very similar-and so more intimate.
We were very lucky to have Jelly as a driver because he was very good at finding animals , he had a very good eye .
You are offered 2 safaris a day and when we came back from the evening safari a boy from Samburu tribe showed guests slides about his culture : his name was Steve and he was absolutely great ; he also had a very good knowledge of stars that illustrated us during a clear night sky. We regret so much not being able to visit his local tribe.
It was really a memorable experience . thank you to all of you
