Having wanted to stay in downtown Matsuyama rather than the ryokan-packed Dogo onsen area, and having been told that all other downtown hotels were booked, we decided to suck it up and pay 23 000 yen per night to stay right off of Okaido shopping street. The room was spacious and clean, but the decor was right out of 1986--pastel pinks and greens everywhere. We paid less for better in the heart of Tokyo. ANA Hotel was a disappointment. Stay at the Toyoko Inn instead.

beautiful common areas. rooms small by american standards. ours smelt smokey.
beautiful view from 14th floor breakfast buffet overlooking the castle. get a breakfast coupon if possible. buffet cost 1850Yen.
opposite a pretty shopping street and beside the very fancy mitsukoshi department store. supposedly the nicest hotel in matsuyama.
