Stayed here as part of an arranged business trip where the company I was visiting booked the hotel for us. The service was impeccable and the authentic experiences at this hotel were very memorable. I highly recommend the mineral baths, really made me travel weary body feel better.

There are a lot of small and typical ryokans in the surrounding area of the old Dogo Onsen of Matsuyama. If you can manage some Japanese, prefer a last minute booking on site. It not, the big modern hotels could be an alternative but they look a little bit industrial. Funaya is the genuine high class ryokan in this place, nice onsen (three baths) with all amenities, a swimming pool sunny in summertime. Several external customers are coming for spa activities. Good room and service perfect in the Japanese way.

I've seen some pretty nice accomodations around the world, and this is on par with the finest. The service was better than i've ever experienced. In western high end hotels the service is great, but it's stuffy, pretentious, and stiff. At Funaya, it's great Japanese service with a genuine delivery. The price includes a 5 course gourmet French meal that in most major cities would be in the $600 - $1,000 range for 2 people.
What can I say about the room, or should I say rooms? You get an immacularte Modern Japanese ryokan room, a 5 star western style room with dining room table and corner panoramic view. 2 bathrooms, and other multi-use rooms. You have a dedicated staff member waiting on you at all times. You're a 3 minute walk from the oldest onsen in Japan - the famous Dogo Onsen. I could go on and on.

Funaya is really a wonderful place to experience japanese ryokan.
Top-grade service, clean rooms and excellent kaiseki food.
You should not skip the common bath (onsen, segregated), which I preferred to the famous Dogo Onsen
