Hijoji Minshuku is located about 20 mins from Kumamoto station by foot, and about 5 mins by car. It is located slightly uphill where you get a slight view of the area. Walk back to the house at night can prove to be challenging because the road is not so lit up and it is a one-lane car way so there might be oncoming cars, and it can be quite a climb especially if you have some heavy bags with you.
The owner, Mr Nobu, is a retired man, living alone, always on his computer. He speaks a little english and is very approachable. You can ask him for any directions and maps.
The living room is slightly messy and dusty but cosy. He doesn't have much TV channels. When we were there, it was always showing the Winter Olympics. You can help yourself to the refreshments and usage of the fridge.
One of the rooms have semi-transparent door, not much privacy but the rooms are comfortable enough.
The toilet is not very aired but the shower room is acceptable. Do remember to ask him to switch on the warmer during winter. We nearly froze to death trying to take showers.
He has two pet dogs which like to scratch at the glass doors but they are generally harmless.
The rooms are only JPY 3,000 per night per person, and is quite economical if you intend to stay at Kumamoto for one/ two nights. He also offers to drive you to and fro from the station. Just give him a ring and arrange a time for him to pick you up.
