“Home stay at Higoji”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2010

Hijoji Minshuku is located about 20 mins from Kumamoto station by foot, and about 5 mins by car. It is located slightly uphill where you get a slight view of the area. Walk back to the house at night can prove to be challenging because the road is not so lit up and it is a one-lane car way so there might be oncoming cars, and it can be quite a climb especially if you have some heavy bags with you.
The owner, Mr Nobu, is a retired man, living alone, always on his computer. He speaks a little english and is very approachable. You can ask him for any directions and maps.
The living room is slightly messy and dusty but cosy. He doesn't have much TV channels. When we were there, it was always showing the Winter Olympics. You can help yourself to the refreshments and usage of the fridge.
One of the rooms have semi-transparent door, not much privacy but the rooms are comfortable enough.
The toilet is not very aired but the shower room is acceptable. Do remember to ask him to switch on the warmer during winter. We nearly froze to death trying to take showers.
He has two pet dogs which like to scratch at the glass doors but they are generally harmless.
The rooms are only JPY 3,000 per night per person, and is quite economical if you intend to stay at Kumamoto for one/ two nights. He also offers to drive you to and fro from the station. Just give him a ring and arrange a time for him to pick you up.

“Friendly in an off-hand sort of way”

As the only minshuku stay we had in Japan, Higoji was a bit disappointing. The owner, Noble, picked us up from the station which was great. However, that's where the 'service' stopped. Our room was basic and comfortable but grubby. Like the bathroom which is really dirty, the whole place could do with a good clean. We had to ask about everything, was the tea/coffee? Could we use a frig? The place is in a good location and has potential but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

“Wonderful owner, great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2009

The owner, Baba-san, is probably the best part of the Minshuku. He will pick you up from the station, drive you back, answer any sort of question, and knows all the sightseeing around. Unlike most accomodations, he has all the train and bus schedules handy and can help you plan your trip. He even has a 1-day Kumamoto sightseeing guide all planned out for people interested.

Definitely stop in here and check out the site at www.higoji.com. Tell him Benjamin sent you, :p

“Helpful owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2008

This is not your ordinary kind of accommodation. It's actually someone's house. The owner's mother lives here as well. The room is pleasant with no crowd at all as they only have 3 rooms to let. The only problem I had was the toilet. It's not been washed in months. There was a heater in the bathroom that was most welcoming as it's very chilly in there.

“Great Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2007

Higoji is a really cute little Minshuku hidden away on Hanaoka Mountain. Its hard to find but worth the serach. We were greeted by the friendly owner, who was more than happy to recommend places to visit, places to eat extra, he even had English Maps at the ready for us tourists! The rooms came complete with tv, aircon, kerosene heater and kinda of balcony. Definitely the best value for money!
