“Excellent Hotel with very good front desk staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2010

We chose this hotel since it was close to the "port" although you need to be sure which port you mean. Popping over to the volcano the other side true, for the Yakushima hydrofoil no, that's 2 miles away although it does not really matter. So arrived late-ish in the afternoon checked in, large front looking room with good views and free wired internet. Went out to get a taxi to the hydrofoil to organise tickets for the next day and that's when the fun began. Taxi driver went back in the hotel, I followed.... what typhoon ?. Umm that thing off the east coast that I had been looking at on the weather map was indeed a typhoon and nothing was sailing that day....

This is where the front desk stepped in, said no need to go to the hydrofoil we can book it for tomorrow. Question is whether they will be sailing, we think so... Booked tickets. The front desk then phoned up the car hire on Yakushima island to tell them which port
we were arriving at and at what time to be met the following day. Then pushing our luck we then asked them to phone the care hire in Ibusuki to tell them what time we would be arriving there. Issue too late for the office to be open but least we knew we could pick the car up the next day. We said we would get up at 5:30 to check whether the typhoon had passed and the hydrofoil was running. Morning came, they checked the screen on the website and all was good.

Full marks to the front desk and one particular individual that did all of this for us since we don't speak a word of Japanese. Now onto the rest.

The "Asian Fusion" restaurant which is the sea facing one, same area as the breakfast one was a bit of a disaster with the lights being off but turned on for us. The meal was cold and the waiter was lacklustre. Probably better to have gone out in retrospect.

The breakfast however was very good and the volcano decided to put up a puff which only I and the partner observed. So excellent views and the quality of the food and choice was good.

Some people as a recall said about noise from the port, I can only say they must have been eating magic mushrooms since you aren't going to get port noises though double glazing at this distance and why sleep with your window open ?...

In summary a good clean hotel, very helpful front desk staff, good breakfast but skip having dinner in least in the "Asian Fusion" restaurant, nice rooms, good view.

“Nice, clean hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

We stayed at the Kagoshima Tokyo hotel in June while traveling with our adult son, who is currently living in Japan. It helped that he speaks some of the language because the staff there speak very little english. The hotel set us up with a car and driver for a day of touring - there were specific museums we wanted to see and decided this would be the most efficient way to see them all. The breakfast buffet was very good - an interesting mix of Japanese and non-Japanese breakfast items. We were very close to the ferry, which was good for us - there was another museum we wanted to see on the other side of the bay. We were the only non-Japanese we saw in the three days we spent in Kagoshima. I actually caught schoolchildren staring at me, I guess because we were such an oddity! Overall, the hotel was clean and efficient, and I felt it was a good bargain.

“Adequate but far away from town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

Arriving in Kagoshima airport is fun- there are hourly buses into different parts of town. Just outside the airport is a place to dip your feet in the Hots springs (towels available for 200yen). The drive into town is long- at least 1-1/12 hours. The bus drops you off a block from the hotel.
The staff are so friendly (always bowing) and the room is large- get one facing Kinko bay and the volcano- really spectacular views). The internet is free and they do provide a travel adaptor. The bathroom is small, modular and lined with that plastic stuff that they advertise in "re-doing your bath"- adequate but move on ASAP!!
Breakfast was included and very diverse enabling Americans and Japanese to eat well!
Across the raod are a few small eateries- noodle bowls (very tasty indeed)

There are 3 buses an hour to the main bus station (takes about 20-25 minutes) and they are punctual- 08:24 is just that!

“Excellent view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

Very nice, reasonably priced hotel, on the bay near a ferry. Contrary to what another person said, we did not hear any noise from the ferry, even with our balcony door open, and we slept very well here, on comfortable twin beds, with lots of space, very good free cabled Internet access, and our own private balcony with a spectacular view of the bay and the volcano. We were able to walk a block or so to the ferry, in order to board buses bound for downtown and the train terminal. The bus could get us downtown in about 15 minutes. There was another bus, called City View, which would take us around to all of the tourist attractions, for 600 yen, unlimited travel for a day. This was fun but not so convenient, and sometimes we had to wait a long time for the bus to arrive. When we would get tired of using the bus and hail a taxi, we ended up paying about 1800 yen to get back to the hotel. The hotel's breakfast, for about 1000 yen, was pretty good. We didn't try the hotel's restaurant and instead found some nice places to eat downtown, using recommendations on the internet. However, we did enjoy eating lunch at a delicious ramen place across the street from the hotel, tucked away in a small shopping center with the entrance facing away from the bay. We were disappointed with the onsen at the pool. It had no view, and the water didn't seem warm enough. Also, it was in a neglected messy area near an empty swimming pool, and we decided not to try it.
