My wife and I were in Yokohama, Japan for a teacher’s conference. The school recommended the Comfort hotel. Having no previous experience in Japan, we welcomed the advice. We were not disappointed. The Comfort hotel (part of Choice Hotels International) was conveniently located about a three-minute walk from the Kannai JR station (elevated train – which can be taken into Tokyo in about 20-30 minutes for around 5-6 USD) and about a one-minute walk from the Kannai subway. We never used the subway but I imagine it also connects to the Tokyo lines. The hotel staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. They made restaurant suggestions, provided maps, retrieved information on the Internet, made dinner reservations and even called for taxi services for us. I never felt like a tip was necessary (tipping is very rare in Japan). The hotel had free a computer with Internet in the lobby (printing and faxing was extra) and a free delicious continental breakfast in the morning. In our room, we found cable TV (with a bilingual television), refrigerator, a/c and heat, an ultra-modern toilet, free hi-speed Internet and a hair dryer. The rooms are small. This is the biggest negative but it seems like the common curse for reasonable priced rooms in Japan. Even though the room was small, the space was well thought out – not an inch wasted. Yokohama and the Comfort Hotel offer a convenient location outside the bustle of Tokyo but still in an urban setting with some attractions of its own (Chinatown and Landmark Tower). As for price, it seemed reasonable but not cheap. We paid 85 USD a night for a double bed non-smoking room (in March 2007). This was the price set up for the conference. I could not find rates on-line. I would recommend it for anyone who must stay in Yokohama and for those who want to stay on the outside of Tokyo but be able to get into the city easily.
