“Not worth the money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

We stayed at this hotel in a Japanese style room. The decor was eighties style, and the wallpaper was peeling in the bathroom. They never folded up our futons on the second day, so were were stepping over them. We had the breakfast buffet which was really below average. The walls in the halls were shabby and the dirty awning out front set the tone.

“Expensive, good experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2010

I stayed here on business. I was traveling with colleagues, but also with my wife and 4-month old.

The rooms are pretty standard size for a US room (so probably large for Japan) - 2 doubles, desk, and a couple of chairs in the Western style room. The bathroom is pretty large. The staff is friendly and helpful - the cleaning is pretty thorough. The breakfast is good with some Japanese and Western style dishes. There are some consistency issues with some of the hot dishes, generally solid.

The location is great - if a little hard to find the first time. Located off a side street near the historic Bikan District - it is tall enough to be spotted from a distance but not signed very well. 10 minute walk from the train station, less than 5 minutes to the Canal. A couple of great restaurants next door.

Our room was pretty heavily discounted for "3" (they counted my 4-month old as one) and still was expensive - especially for no amenities other than breakfast. If I was paying, I think we would have moved to a nearby hotel. But if you don't mind paying a lot it is a fine place to stay.

“Biggest in Japan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2009

Almost directly opposite the old town in Kurashiki is the Nikko Kurashiki hotel. It's not huge but is very tall, consequently the lobby area is small and compact with a greeting desk as soon as you come in and then a larger checking out desk at the far end (behind the lifts). The rooms are big though, the biggest that we'd stayed in on our 3 week trip around Japan. Two double beds plus an area with two armchairs a coffee table and desk. Then the bathroom that is a massive marble room with a large double shower and separate bath. The check in was quick and easy and all in all this is a very pleasant place to spend some time in this region.

“A hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2008

I stayed here for a night with colleagues on a business trip. The hotel is very close to the historic old part of the town built around a canal which gave us a chance to do some sightseeing.

The hotel itself appears to be hidden down a small side street, and seems a little out of place in its surroundings. However once inside it's an efficiently run business hotel. There was a choice of Western style and Japanese style rooms, I opted for western style so I can't comment on the alternative.

My room was spacious, well equipped, clean and comfortable.

Breakfast was self service and included a mix of Japanese and western foods. The system for cooked breakfasts seemed a little odd in that partially cooked foods such as eggs were served cold, but could be handed to the serving staff to be heated. I chose to stick with a continental breakfast, which was more than adequate for my needs.

Overall the staff were pleasant and efficient.
