“Not for Westerners!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2007

Bearing in mind that the hotel had just been hit by a typhoon(!), we were almost the only westerners staying at the hotel. It was very much geared towards Japanese people, even down to the fact that the hotel shuttle bus from the station was only indicated by the Kanji script and not in English. Thankfully we had our daughter with us who has done Japanese A'level and is going on to Cambridge to read Japanese studies. The food was almost purely Japanese and finding something to eat at breakfast was a problem. We stayed in a Japanese style room which was comfortable even though we were sleeping on the floor, but the bathroom facilities were basic to say the least. The hotel itself was rather tatty, with faded and worn carpets. To be honest it was poor value for money. You can 'do' the town of Atami in an afternoon and from then on need to travel to see anything. As with all the Japanese hotels we stayed in, the staff were totally charming and polite, but at the Akao their English was poor.

“Gorgeous view, tatami floors, BATH HOUSE!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2007

Location: Its located along the coast of Atami and has a stunning view of the ocean. One side of the hotel will see the city and ocean while the other will see the hotel's garden and ocean. My room got to see the sunrise and it was gorgeous. This isn't a place you would stay for a long time unless you really like oceans and bathhouses. I would stay here for 2 days max and head back towards Tokyo.

Service: Very friendly, in fact, probably the friendliest out of all the hotels I've stayed in Japan. They are personable and try exceptionally hard to provide warm and caring service.

Rooms: Traditional tatami floors and the staff members will make your beds for you with the mattresses inside the closet. Bathroom is divided with the toilet on one side and the shower/sink on the other. Its clean, but not necessarily a 5 star bathroom either. The view of the rooms alone are worthwhile though.

Bathhouse: Its very simple, not special sulfur treatments or what not. Just a simple bathhouse with an indoor and outdoor option. The outdoor is substantially smaller, but provides a nice view of the sky. It looks lovely at night, but it was cold everytime we stood up to take a look at the view. Those that haven't tried out a bathhouse before should give this place a try, you'll feel very comfortable. Just remember to wear the hotel provided kimonos (nothing traditional or fancy).

  • Liked — bath house, view, traditional rooms
  • Disliked — While our rooms were clean, a guest did encounter a cockroach in the restaurant. Staff members were quick to catch it.

“Lovely stay at the New Akao”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2007

This hotel has an amazing view from every single room. I loved it! There were indoor and outdoor hot spring bathes. The outdoor one is small, but quaintly decorated with rocks and a tiny waterfall. I stayed here as part of a tour and I would have to say this was my favorite hotel during our 5 day trip in the Tokyo area of Japan.

“I love this old style JP hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2007

I just back from Asia. This hotel is so unforgettable. Maybe Fall or Winter is the best time to visit Atami. My oceanview room is terriffic to watch Atami downtown. The heater is prettry warm in room so I let my window open a little bit and the cooler air is so fresh and mild. I can't believe my room is just above the sea. It is not damp at all maybe I am lucky to live in at the right season. You are right, I didn't see any air conditioner.
That night, I had a really good sweet dream with very soft wave murmur, just like a relaxing therapy by ocean. The next morning, you should walk out to visit its garden. There is a trail with 15min walk from lobby 17F to 2F or you can try walk from 2F to up. Anyway, you won't forget its natural cliff and coast view .
Oh, I love this old style Japanese hotel.

  • Liked — view, fresh air and ocean's murmur
  • Disliked — the indoor warm spring area is too stuffy

“Very grand and attentive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2005

I stayed only one night in this hotel and I thought it was very nice. The sea view from my room was gorgeous, even if it was a bit foggy during the hotter season. The hot spring baths were very enjoyable, but beyond the little booklet of common courtesy in Japanese bathhouses, there is no staff to help out, so it's DIY. I recommend the outdoor spring. You get a strange sensation of being very warm while the environment is chilly outside. There is a bit of a mildewy feeling in the hotel, but it's to be expected being on the side of a mountain by the sea. The best part of the hotel is the size. It's very spacious, very grand, and the area that it encompasses is so great that they have private buses going back and forth taking guests to their fantastic private garden on another part of the mountain. The staff has a schedule of events every day (some which are free) so that guests won't get bored. I'd say it's a good place to relax for anywhere from 1 to 3 days, but anything more and you may run out of activities -- unless you grow very fond of the hot spring bath. The town itself is very suburban, very cute, and accessible via free private hotel bus every 30-45 minutes during daylight hours. The Atami beach in town is beautiful and very peaceful. Warning though: The surroundings make for a very romantic getaway, but the general hotel guest demographic seems to be older (50+) and family oriented. Also, the staff's English is extremely limited, but they sure try hard.
