We arrived at night. Convenient free Shuttle bus from the station took us through a tunnel. Could not believe the look of the Lobby when we first arrived. It was creepy, and yet nostalgic. I can't describe it in words very well, but there was something about the hotel that took be back in time when I visited Japan as child. It was old, a strange mix of Japanese and western decor. I was waiting to find a photo of me somewhere near the dining room of my previous life. Lobby is not the 17th Floor and rooms are located below. Rooms have gorgeous ocean view. No where in the US would the Corps of Engineers allow a hotel so close the water. Breakfast dining room as a breathtaking view of the ocean and rock formations. Loved the breakfast selection, mostly Japanese food. As for dinner, if you are allergic to seafood, you may want to tell the staff as soon as you check in. The staff and hotel Chef were terrific in accommodating my husband- explaining each dish at the dinner buffet on the first night, and providing him with a non-seafood dinner on the second night. The hotel provides free shuttle to the Atami station, so we took advantage of that in the morning to do some initial sightseeing at the Museum of Modern Art near the station. Walked through the town to Super Max Value supermarket/ department store, and caught a cab back to the hotel for mere $8.
There are 2 onsen baths in the resort. An inside one and an outside one. Outside one is open less hours than inside one, but it has a great outdoor view. A bit chilly to bath in, but once you get int he water, it is wonderful. The inside bath does not have a glass fascade like most other onsen we have been to, but it was quite spacious.
We chose to stay in a western room. Bathroom is tiny. Good tv. Small refrig to keep snacks. Room needed some dusting. To me, the open window at night and the sound of the ocean was quite soothing. the November air was just right.
Staff was not so good in English, but very friendly and very helpful.
