“Enjoyable stay in Takayama”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2010

We had a very enjoyable 2 nights stay at Ryokan Asunaro. The directions from the station given to us were very easy to follow. We were greeted warmly by the owner upon arrival. The ryokan was very busy but this did not affect the service. We enjoyed our evening meal immensely, though we struggled sitting cross-legged for the meal - just an age thing! When we made our booking we decided on a Japanese style breakfast one morning and a Western one the next. Unfortuntely our Western breakfast never materialised and we had to have another Japanese one. This wasn't really a problem but as interesting as eating rice, pickles and miso soup etc.was the first time, we would have preferred Western for the second. The owners were really nice and friendly and the ladies that served us our meals were delightful. We had a room with a bathroom and toilet but still had the traditional bedding on the tatami mats. We were in time for the last afternoon of the town's Spring festival which was very interesting to watch. The town itself was great to wander round - the cherry blossoms and lots of small shops with souvenirsand gifts. We actually had snow on our first morning there - not enough to stay long on the ground, unfortunately it developed into rain for the day, but we enjoyed the experience of Takayama and the ryokan.

“disappointed, but maybe not fault of the hotel itself”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2010

bad part of the city, which is disappointing enough - all the fabulous pics i saw before appeared to be from a street and a half, also the ryokan itself produces beautiful pictures which fools you about the surrounding and shows beautiful entrance to sort of industrial building from metal and concrete elements located between two huge bus parkings. But it seems it is customary for Japan, so local clients probably would not complain - but for sure it destroyed my wa. Something not kosher with the ventilation, which seems to be pretty old.

“great ryokan experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2010

I was concerned how the place will be after reading some of the review here, but we went during the spring festival and had problem finding a place, so we took it as it is. But, we are very pleasantly surprised! The room was HUGE - it had a bedroom and a living room parts, tea, heating, a space next to the window with chairs, bathroom and toilet - huge, compared to many Japanese hotels; The place was very clean!
The hot tub was also good.

The staff - great! friendly! meals - very very good! If you want to have sake in the room, they will bring you. Always smiling and helpful!

They have a great collection of small statuettes, that were bought by the grandmother of the owner - an absolute collection.
When we were leaving, we were given a small Japanese bag (hand made by the mother of the owner). The owners and the staff were simply incredible!
The stay at the ryokan was one of the best experiences.

I strongly recommend the place!

“Very friendly and excellent food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2010

weather was quite cold for the time of year but the welcome was very warm. Room was typical tatami mats etc and meals were taken in a private dining room which was very nice. All the facilities were on offer, internet, TV and the hot bath which was excellent. Noone in when we went so had the bath to ourself. You do not stay here for the view but the people. They even ran us to the station when we left as it was raining. If you are looking for the traditional inn then this is a good one.

“A real disappointment on our first and only stay at a ryokan!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

On our two weeks tour around Japan we decided to stay once at a ryokan and booked in advance for two nights incl breakfast and dinner. We hoped for a genuine japanese experience.
Although high season, the ryokan seemed to us to be empty on the first night: we were the only one at the onsen and did not see any other guests in the entire hotel. Also, we were the only once having dinner in a private room. So, the numerous neatly placed outdoor shoes at the entrance looked to us to be placed by the staff.

- Service/Food: We were very much looking forward to a wonderful dinner including fresh Hida beef and other speciality of the region. What we then recieved as a Kaiseki dinner was everything else: so we ended up leaving the plates have full.
At the second day a japanese group was staying at the ryokan and had dinner at the same time like us - very interestingly, the quality of the food was enourmesly higher than the day before. Now the served dinner was eatable! This experience seemed to us like the ryokan was not interested in prepearing a deasent meal for western tourists - very shameful!

- Room: We totally missed the warm athmosphere as mentioned on their homepage. In our room there was just a neon light.

We can't compare to other ryokans, but for an other time we will definitely choose a hotel instead. All in all a very basic stay in a totally overpriced ryokan!
