“Wonderful people, location, activities and service made for a really memorable holiday”

From the pick-up at the airport and the 'conducted tour' on the way to the lodge, the friendliness of the Zambians was so evident,we knew we were going to have a memorable stay. The reception at the lodge was warm and we were pleasantly surprised by our room. A beautiful view of the Zambezi, and an open air shower, with Pears explaining all the features and services of the lodge.
Natalie and Willem made sure our activities were well organized and no request was too much trouble. They run the lodge efficiently and unobtrusively. The incredible staff really made the stay memorable. Always smiling and willing to chat and assist wherever possible. Alfred showed his knowledge of flora and fauna on the game drive and falls tour. With all the activities on offer in the area we found this to be an ideal getaway combining relaxation and excitement in a beautiful setting. Thank you all.

“Unexpected paradise near Livingstone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

The lodge is in the middle of the park, 10 km outside Livingstone, there are no barriers in the park so you can easily see elephants or hippos very close to your room. The lodge is very quiet, close to the lion walk and elephant ride. It is an all inclusive, so you can have drinks 24 hours, all meals included. The room is very big and cosy. The lodgers are very friendly and can organise whichever excursion for you. The lodge has a private guide to the Victoria Falls, very experienced.

“View the Zambezi from bed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

Stayed here for 5 nights August 2011 and had a great time. Unlike game lodges where people go to bed early for dawn game drives, life is calmer here. Despite the cooler winter nights (jumper needed some nights) people stayed after dinner and chatted or played cards at the bar. We made some great friends.
All rooms look out on the Zambezi - say 10 metres away. Our teenage sons were given a smaller hut, but with a view of the river from bed - so we quickly swapped with them. Morning 1 we saw a river otter 7 metres away, looking at us.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the open-sided restaurant, lunch in semi-shade on the lawn. Hippos come to the lawns at night (we saw them) so you are escorted to/from the hut.
Food fairly plain, with disappointing puddings. Vegetarians who don't eat fish may go mad eating pasta in tomato sauce.

We booked via a South African airline Kulula. After paying a hefty price for the trip, with flights from Joburg, we then were told to keep the booking we had to pay an extra £600 (ZAR 6,000) because the 4 of us were not from Africa (SADAC countries). Could have cancelled but despite going ahead were a little sore about being charged more for having travelled further!
This is an oasis of calm and we would certainly return.

Despite the comments about food this is a little oasis of calm, no pressure to be up at at it from before dawn. Alfred is the top member of staff - hope he stays.

“Heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

We booked our stay at Thorntree through Jeanine at Riverview Travel, Centurion; she was extremely helpful & attentive.
The Lodge is situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi & we were greeted by Wilhelm & Nathalie, who were fantastic hosts.
The accommodation is absolutely fantastic & extremely well tended by the staff, who without exception were polite, courteous & very helpful. The catering is of a very high standard & we were very well looked after.
Victoria Falls are amazing & the trip to Livingstone Island is absolutely brilliant.
A special mention is deserved for Alfred who guided us around the Falls & also provide a trip around Livingstone; a real gentleman.
Thorntree River Lodge is a fabulous place to stay at an idyllic location with an abundance of local wildlife.

“Warm, Welcoming, Wonderful , Well-disposed Lodge”

We stayed here for 2 nights, while exploring Livingstone & Victoria Falls; we wish it had been longer. The lodge is beautifully located on the river banks. All rooms have a lovely outside sitting area, although the open-air lodge is very inviting to relax, talk to other guests, or plan your next adventure w Natalie's expertise to guide you. Lunch served outside, under a large shady tree, with monkeys scampering about, was delicious. It was comparable to a California Cuisine lunch w delicious home made breads. Dinner, served around a beautiful hand-carved wood table, in a gorgeous setting, was delicious, from soup to dessert. Hippos like to graze on the lawns & we enjoyed this evening ritual. The lodge is extremely well-maintained & the rooms are immaculate. Linen, beds, pillow were VERY comfortable, as was the extra large bedroom & bathroom. You can't go wrong staying here. Enjoy!
