My husband I have stayed at the Green Plaza twice within the last two years, most recently in November 2011. if you're most interested in staying in the city, rather than down by the beach, the location isn't bad.
When you first walk in the lobby, the hotel appears to be quite nice...large and grand looking. Checking in was quick and easy. No, the staff doesn't speak perfect English, and I wouldn't expect them to, but they are friendly and efficient. Once you step into the elevator, you may detect a slightly damp smell, and don't be surprised if you smell it a few other places. We arrived at the end of Da Nang's rainy season and it was clear something had been leaking, somewhere. Sometimes the lights are on in the hallways druring the day, and sometimes they're not. Not sure if this is an energy saving measure?
The rooms themselves are perfectly nice and clean.--wood floors throughout, including the bathroom, which are kept clean? Housekeeping staff is friendly and attentive. Laundry service
was excellent and done the same day. The only issue in the room was the shower. It came on full blast and the water couldn't drain out fast enough, so after a few minutes I was standing in a couple inches of water. I would try to cut my showers short so as to not flood the stall, but then we figured out the trick with the handle that reduced the water pressure. When we stayed two years ago, we had a tub, encased in a glass wall. The water would spray all over the edges and down onto the floor-- a total mess that we had to keep cleaning up. Don't know if they've fixed that problem. The beds are good-- very firm.
Breakfast is ok. The staff in the dining room are lovely and provided good service as far as bringing coffee and clearing dishes go. The buffet--while there is a ton of food-- could be improved. Many dishes are hot, served in chafing dishes, but there's nothing to keep the food hot, which is probably a bit of a health hazard. Breakfast began at 6 but I often didn't make it down till after 8. By that time, the food was lukewarm. The good news is, there was always toast! Someone was there making fresh omelets as well.
The pool area is not bad. On the 8th floor, it's a nice place to lie in a chair and read. The small gym is slightly depressing but it has a treadmill and a decent elliptical and some free weights.
Despite a few issues, I'd probably stay at the Green Plaza again if I were staying in the city, mostly because I don't know of anywhere better. The HAGL is likely a bit fancier, and from what people were saying about the Mercure, it sounds like a nice place worth checking out. If you decide to stay at the Green Plaza, be sure to check out the Bamboo2 bar justva few doors down the street, and also Highlands Coffee, a bit farther past Bamboo.
