“Good Location on Nice Beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2007

My review of My Khe Beach Hotel number 1. [A new My Khe Beach hotel has just been built about a block away– it’s called My Khe Beach Hotel II (2). We stayed at the older, original one -- My Khe Beach Hotel number 1.] This hotel is in a really good location. This is it's biggest advantage. Step out the front door of the hotel, and cross a street, and you find yourself on a nearly deserted beautiful beach, with white sand, and breaking waves. The beach stretches on for miles, and makes for some really nice walking. We enjoyed some really good seafood on the beach just north of the hotel, sitting on beach chairs in the sand under a ‘palapa’. As for the hotel, be sure to confirm your reservations by phone directly with the hotel staff the day before you arrive. A Vietnamese friend made our reservation for us, and then when we arrived at the hotel about 3 days later, they claimed someone had called to cancel our reservation (which was impossible). Luckily they were able to find us a room. Unfortunately the room was not in top shape – a spare mattress propped against the wall, the pipes in the bathroom below the sink leaked out onto your legs and feet when you washed your hands, and the room was not very clean. There were food particles on the rug, that remained for the duration of our two night stay. Even the daily cleaning service didn’t get the rug cleaned up. Our room was one of the larger rooms – a suite with a separate bedroom and living room. Both of these rooms had doors that open onto the shared breezeway, overlooking the ocean. The locks on these two doors were not working very well – I was able to push our door open from the outside on the breezeway. As for the staff, the younger receptionist was not overly helpful, but the older woman was helpful. Both spoke English. Breakfast was included with our room price. The options included a small selection of french style breakfasts (bread, butter, eggs), but no Vietnamese options were available. Perhaps we caught the hotel on a bad weekend, because I think it has potential to be better.

“We loved this place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2007

This was a very simple, but spacious hotel right across the highway from the beach. We arrived and to our bad luck, they had not gotten our reservations from the ‘middle’ man we went through. They also said that they didn’t have any rooms available. After a few calls, the receptionist said that she made arrangements and we would be able to get us some rooms by 4PM.

The rooms are spacious. Ours had a sitting room with large hardwood furniture. The bedroom had a large bed. The drain in the shower would back up a bit, but other than that, I found nothing wrong with the rooms. Our room faced the beach and we could watch the sunrise every morning.

The location is ideal, and many local Vietnamese will agree with you. You can walk across the road every morning and buy local food…or you can elect to eat behind the hotel at the simple restaurant which served western foods. We elected to do both!

In the morning (5-6:30AM), or in the evening (6PM+), the beach becomes very crowded with local Vietnamese. They will come and walk, play badminton, swim, run, have picnics, talk, or whatever pleases them. It is a time of socializing between family and friends. In the day time though, the beach clears out and you can find that solitude on the beach, however hot it is, that you look for.

This might not be the hotel for everyone. There are relatively few if any westerners here in the hotel, or on the beach. The staff does not cater to your every need, and their English is not the best…but our Vietnamese is not the best either and it’s their country<g>. This is a simple, but nice, hotel that is an ideal base location for your visit that will allow you to immerse yourself into the Vietnamese culture. Later we would stay at the Sandy Beach Resort Hotel, and although very nice, we longed to be back at the My Khe Mot hotel. We will pick this hotel when we come back next year.

Hotel was first class, rooms were brilliant, clean, just walk across the road to a beach, not as good say hua hin, phuket, but clean, only deck chairs however and old. Staff had no english, breakfast was adequate.
Lonely Planet said plenty of sea food beach cafes, apart from two posh ones we couldnt find any you would dream of eating in,The beach was completely deserted even at the weekend. However for a quiet time brilliant, plenty of good restaurants in the evening £3 away by the riverside

“So-so room but views are to-die-for”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2006

The ONLY reason why we stayed at My Khe Beach Hotel was that we had an early flight out of Danang and it made more sense to get to the airport on time from within Danang compared to rushing from Hoi An.

Located on the fabled My Khe Beach (aka China Beach), the views did not disappoint. Even though it's called a hotel, I think they were more like holiday flats.

We got a spacious unit out front; with a single and double bed in place, there was still plenty of room to move about. No carpeting though, just ceramic tiles that felt a bit... icky. But it's a practical solution, especially with all the fine sand that you can track back after a stroll on the beach. The toilet was spartan but roomy. Strictly functional. Do close the louvres though; anyone standing on a chair can look in if the louvres are open too wide.

Access to the beach was ok although they did block the shortest route for some strange reason. We had dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants (right turn after you step out of the gates) there. Supremely fresh and tasty like what you'd expect Vietnamese food to be. Cheap too!

It was World Cup season and expectedly, the restaurant/bar just below our room was noisy. I'd expect it to be quieter now World Cup's over; traffic noise was negligible. The air condtioning could've been more powerful but we did sleep ok after sampling the local TV channels.

The real highlight of the stay was catching the glorious sunrise the next morning. In addition to watching and photographing the golden orb rising out of the water, it was great to see the local population fit in some early walking/jogging/swimming/exercise in the rising sun before the workday proper began.

Like checking in, the check-out was unremarkable. We had to leave for the airport before their breakfast service started so we didn't get to sample the spread; we made do with beef noodles at a cafe opposite Danang Airport later. No big loss, I suppose.

If you're looking for a functional place to stay, My Khe Beach Hotel would be a reasonable choice. If you're looking for something more deluxe, I guess the Furama or Sandy Beach Resorts further down the beach would be better.

In either case, the beaches at Danang are pristine and the views are unforgettable. Go there quickly before it becomes over-developed.

  • Liked — Great views, decent location, near beach and seafood places
  • Disliked — Sticky floor, unremarkable staff, useless breakfast timing
  • Tips/Secrets — Watch where you sit on the beach; "rental" for the beachchairs are 1000VND

“Room with mosquitoes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2006

This review is for My Khe Beach Hotel (My Khe 1)

Danang City, Vietnam

We stayed one night in April 2006.

The Receptionist was a nice young lady in ao dai. She let us choose the rooms we like. There are 4 blocks, I think, in this hotel. The main block is where the Reception is located. Next to this is the nicest block having VIP rooms (the main block has too). Next to this nice block on the left we saw a room in the last block with no carpet and very old with twin beds, so we came back to the block on the right hand side of the Reception with 3 small beds in each room. We took room 102 and 103.

I booked through a travel agent in Hanoi for 2 sea view rooms next to each other, US$28net each with breakfast for 2. Room 102 was right under the staircase, so the sea view is not completed. It has a bath tub, but we couldn't use it as it was stuffed with either hair or tissue and nothing to close the drainage to keep water for using the bath tub. The water didn't run down completely if I took a shower in the bath tub, so I had to step on the floor. The towels were very old, small and thin.

Late in the night during our sleep, at least 10 mosquitoes started to bite even though we turned on the air con. I had a dream that I used a spray bottle to spray the mosquitoes. End of the room, there's a door to the back yard. I saw a water pump machine near my room with little noise but didn't bother me if I close the door. From the back door I also saw local people houses very near the hotel. Old area. A little dirty.

The room is quite spacious. The air con, the tivi worked well. They gave us a hot water pot for our tea. The charge for telephone out from the room was not expensive, so does the laundry. The set menu for meal in their restaurant was very good at VND55,000 but I couldn't order. They said on the day restaurant had to close for an outside catering for a wedding.

The hotel restaurant was quite nice and clean, but looked very empty as there were only 6 foreigners including us having breakfast that day. When I came down to eat around 7am, they had not opened. We asked them to prepare and we came back after 8.

To sea bath, we crossed the very nice big street and saw really crowded beach. The hotel has a big parking lot but most of the scooters are from local people coming to the beach who are not hotel guests.

Leaving the Reception Counter on your left hand side, you’ll see a restaurant. A few steps on the right lead you to another restaurant. We ate in both. A course of local food is about VND35,000. Right on the beach if you like, you can eat seafood cooked right there, hot and tasty at much lower cost. At least 100 booths selling food on the beach in front of and nearby My Khe Hotel.

What impressed me much was there were people clearing the sand, and guests had good practice of keeping clean. About 7pm there were staff from a company (Danang Tourism maybe I’m not sure) asked you to go up as it was not safe to swim in the night.

We rent scooters VND15,000 an hour to visit Marble Mountain (Ngu Hanh Son) which took us 2 hours for going around and bought some stone products, no time to visit any mountain in the group of 5 mountains. The lady selling stone souvenirs in the My Khe sold the same price with what we bought outside, but hers was not real stone. Some items of her was having good price so after leaving Marble Mountain, we came back to buy from her.

The curtain for door and windows was a very low cost cloth. The room had no carpet. The mattress was going down when I slept on. The linen was clean but simple. The room I stayed was worth US$20 maximum. When dialing Reception, they just “aloh” instead of greeting like in other hotels. I regret we booked into this place.
