“Poor value for the money and staff are quite disorganized!”

We were brought to this hotel by a contact in the city, and found the room rates to be fairly decent for a location close to the beach. The room was spacious enough, but not as clean as we'd hoped for (we saw some ants) and the shower door did not close properly so everytime we showered, water would leak out onto the floor. We also asked if the hotel provided free internet service, but were informed that the connection had not been working since earlier in the week (though my bf later saw the reception staff using the internet).

I would say security is not a top priority at this hotel (even though they have someone stationed at the hotel entrance at most times). We were forced to leave our room key at reception, however, they simply kept all keys in a basket towards the side of the reception desk (which was sometimes unsupervised). On several occasions, we were given the wrong room key. Also, upon checkout, we were mistaken for another couple and given the wrong passports! I only noticed because we were charged double what we had agreed to pay. When questioned about this issue, the staff realized that they had given us the wrong passports for the wrong room.

We were supposed to stay for two nights but decided to take our chances at another (perhaps cleaner) hotel.

“You must be able to do better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2008

We stayed here on the recommendation of someone else who must have stayed here in the high season or something. When we arrived the place was pretty well deserted, I don't think we saw any other guests there at all.
The receptionist had no English skills at all and had to telephone someone else and hand me the phone to explain we were here to take up a pre-booked room. Asking the receptionist for information became like "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" because she was constantly phoning a friend. Since they knew we were coming and when it would have been a good idea to have had someone we could communicate with on the desk. In the end we gave up.
The room was large and fairly clean but any food left out quickly became riddled with ants. We had a balcony overlooking the sea which was nice but I suspect it won't be there for too many more years as it clearly had concrete cancer and was cracking off the face of the building. The bathroom was also clean but the bathtub (which contained the shower) had very high sides and was challenging to get into and out of safely. We asked the receptionist for some juice but got water, which was an extra. We also asked about breakfast but were told there wasn't any.
I guess because it was the low season, finding places to eat was a challenge. There seemed to be an in-house restaurant and a sort of bar affair, but both were mothballed. The couple of open restuarants we found in the street had very restricted menus (seafood, other seafood, and different seafood) and only served beer to drink, no water or soft drinks. The hotel itself is a long way from the middle of town where other places are, and again because of the low season, finding taxis to take us anywhere was difficult as they just weren't going past.
The bright spot was watching the soccer players out on the beach after the tide went out, they were having a good time and it was fun to watch them.
I wouldn't stay here again unless there were no better options.

“Does not even meet standards of a 2 star hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2008

Some hotels let their age show, and this hotel certainly did. And this hotel did not age gracefully.

The hotel was virtually empty when we arrived. There was no check in because the staff manning the reception could not speak english. We were just given the key, and the porter brought us to the room.

The state of the door to the room gave us a clue as to what we would find inside. The room was spacious enough, with a good view of the beach, but that was also because I paid for one of the better rooms. The room was dilapidated. The floor was sticky, probably due to the saltiness of the enviroment.

The room was infested with bugs. You get ants crawling over you just by lying in bed. One of my backpacks was overrunning with ants after we left some biscuits (still inside its wrapping) in the bag. I killed a cockroach in the bathroom, after which that attracted lots of ants too.

The service at the reception was indifferent and cold. Possibly it was because their spoken English was limited, but even so, that should be no excuse for indifferent service in the hospitality industry. To add insult to injury, they even charge for drinking water. OK. It was just 5000 dong (30 US cents) for a small bottle, but it was also the principle of it. You run a hotel and you do not even provide basic things like drinking water gratis. So much for hospitality.

The only saving grace was the breakfast, which was a decent cooked breakfast which you order from their menu.

In summary, a hotel that does not even live up to its 2 star rating. The location was good, with the beach just across the road, but then, there are several hotels along the same strip, and surely things cannot get any worse in any of them.

“Over-charged us”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2008

We stayed at My Khe Beach Hotel #1 for 4 nights; September 2008. The hotel is very cheap by Western standards and it is suitable for a cheap beach vacation.

My Khe Beach Hotel is in a great location - we loved the beach and area. The hotel is across the street from the fantastic beach - and there are some small restaurant/bars next door and some large/upmarket restaurants just down the road. *(We found the Korean place to be the best value for the money among the upmarket restaurants, BTW.)

The My Khe Beach Hotel #1 is old and very basic. Our bathroom didn't have a doorknob or even glass in the windowpane. When it rained, the wind and rain blew into our bathroom (because there was no glass) and made all the bedroom's windows shake There was also a hole in the wall in our bathroom connecting it to the maid's storage room. The room was clean, the aircon worked well, and the hot water heater worked as well. The beds are small and firm.

Breakfasts were small and greasy. But they were adequate for the room rate.

The hotel is cheap - so I didn't really mind the age or other 2-star aspects. Afterall, what can you really expect from a 2-star hotel?

My main complaint is when we checked-out. The room rates are listed in English at $24 for a basic room and in Vietnamese for the equivilent of $20 for the same room. We noticed this discrepency when we checked in and asked for the $20/night rate. The hotel (and Danang in general) was empty of tourists, so we hoped to get a fair price for the off-season.

The receptionist agreed to charge $20/night since we were staying for 4 nights. However when we checked out, she wouldn't honor her promise of $20/night - instead asking us for $24/night. Plus she charged us for internet (6,000dong - a small amount but annoying since she had said it was free, and since it is so inconvenient and slow) and one bottle of water (10,000dong) that we drank from the mini-bar (one bottle in 4 days!).

Of course we complained and the only other guests in the hotel (a Vietnamese couple) helped us. In the end the hotel charged us $22/night - plus the extra charges for water and internet.

So, all in all it is still a great location and a cheap price. But changing the rate when we checked out is dishonest. Given how many other hotels and guesthouses are being built in this area, I would recommend trying somewhere else. There are newer and nicer places 4 blocks down the road near Non Ngoc beach and other nicer budget guest houses just behind this one.

“Beutiful view, nice resort hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2008

Very nice resort hotel, Spacious rooms (even by western standards), two room suite, air conditioning, TV, shower with tub, Nice balcony looking over road to South China Sea and a very nice beach. The staff was very accommodating but they do charge a reasonable fee for all extra services (i.e. internet, phone calls, maps, early check-in). Breakfast was included, however. The location is great for use of the beach. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. It is about a 30 minute walk to DaNang (Cham Museum, Ho Chi Minh Museum). A car can be arranged to Marble Mountain or Hoi An. Hue is about a 2 hour bus ride. Make sure you get the My Khe I, not the not as nice My Khe II. When we stayed there in February, we were the only ones in the hotel which was a little spooky, but we got great service. Their high season is April to September. Also not their highest end room (deluxe) only has 1 large bed and not 2 twins. It was a very nice place to stay.
