“Appalling service, shoddy rooms, lying staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2007

We booked a double non-smoking room and informed reception that we would be arriving at 1pm.

On arrival at 1pm we checked in and confirmed that we were booked into a double non-smoking room.

We were shown to our room only to be greeted by a stench of cigarette smoke as soon as we opened the door, an ash tray on the table, and two single beds....clearly not what we had booked. We're not sure how they thought we wouldn't notice!

On complaining to reception we were informed that the person in "our double room" was having a late check-out so the room would not be available until 6pm. This became 6.30pm and then 7pm.

By 7.15pm we were informed that "our room" was no longer available at all but we could move to a double room on the second floor in half an hour. This room, and the three others we were subsequently shown, were quite clearly all SMOKING rooms and two were twin rooms yet again!

We had earlier requested to speak to the manager who apparently was not available and "could not speak English". After complaining further an english-speaking manager miraculously appeared.

The manager pretended to listen and "understand our complaint" and promised to speak to the director about substantially discounting the room. We made it clear $5 off would not be good enough.

After waiting a further hour in the twin smoking room the manager called to offer to change the two beds to a double - still in the same smoking room. No mention of a discount.

The manager was supposed to call us back to let us know what discount we were to be given...by 10:30pm, nine and a half hours after checking in, he still had not come back to us and we had to go to reception to call him. We were being offered a $5 discount and another barrel of lies about us never having requested a non-smoking room!!!

To add to this, the rooms themselves are dated, dirty, have intermittent internet, limited or no views, and ALL stink of smoke (we saw 5 rooms in total). The lower level rooms, levels 1&2, are by the hotels own admittance, very noisy from the hotels nightclub. They also lied to us about the price of a taxi to the airport - ranging from 40,000 VND to 65,000 VND. When pushed the manager admitted it should be no more than 25,000.

DO NOT STAY HERE - It's just not worth the money, or the hassle!!!

“A business hotel that does as a stop off”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2007

The hotel is located near the river and off to the side of the town, meaning it's just out of the way of any major activity. The entrance to it looks very nice with a huge driveway and large lobby, and a lounge attached with free internet access for residents.

We stayed there one night and paid $35. The room itself and the bathroom was a good size, but a twin was all they had. The room had cable TV, fridge, hot water (with great shower), wireless internet access in the room, wardrobe, complimentary toiletries, and the usual. The room was very clean and there were no ants (which seem to be everywhere in Asia).

We found the beds to be very soft and being on the first floor, we were right over the VIP nightclub affliated with the hotel and there was quite a racket for most of the night. We asked to move room and although they said they couldn't as they were fully booked, I believed they would have moved us without any problems if they could have. The hotel receives many business customers and appears to always have guests passing staying as they pass through Danang.

The service at the hotel was excellent. The breakfast is not particularly good, but the Vietnamese lunch was really tasty. The staff were friendly and helped us with our Vietnamese and reception booked a taxi to take us round town and a car to take us to Hoi An stopping at the Marble Mountains while the driver waited for us. It cost us $25, which we thought was great.

For:
- Good location near the town centre and river but not affected by related traffic
- Very clean rooms
- Wireless internet access throughout the hotel
- Excellent service

Against:
- Very soft saggy beds
- Can be quite noisy on the lower floors (7 in total)
- Western breakfasts are not good. Go elsewhere.

  • Liked — The service was excellent
  • Disliked — The noisy nightclub underneath us
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to get a floor on a high floor and eat Vietnamese food in the restaurant

“Royal Hotel - Decent 3Star Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2006

I have stay in Royal Hotel during my recent Central Vietnam trip.
It is a decent 3 star hotel tuck away from the River front and hustle. The room was ok and clean and is good value for money.
However, the staff was not very helpful and often try to overcharge foreigner for services like transport etc. Breakfast was a bit disappointing for a 3 star hotel as i have definately enjoy more better breakfast for a local 3 star hotel.
