“A halfway house to relax in whether you're going up or down the country.”

Pros: Peaceful and quiet, lovely gardens, very friendly and helpful staff, good food.
Cons: Room felt slightly damp.

Our booking was made via email but you can also call or book over the web. Refreshments (cookies and fruit juice) are provided on arrival and the helpful staff give you a rundown of all things Hoi An as well as a map showing the way to the various different sites before showing you to your room.

The room we initially stayed in was a bungalow right by the pool. It was very clean, spacious and en-suite with twin beds but the bedding felt a bit damp. The bathroom was also very big and clean with a separate shower and bathtub. On the first night, we found bedbugs in our bed at 1am in the morning. We informed the staff who immediately apologised and moved us to a new room. This is by no means a criticism of the Homestay, they were very professional about the incident and had the room fumigated and furniture/bedding replaced the next morning. Our new room was slightly smaller than the first but equally clean and well presented.

The Homestay has a large garden which was very well kept and presented and was peaceful and relaxing to sit in whilst having a meal from the very good kitchen that did Vietnamese (Very nice Hoi An specialities) and Western food. The pool was small but immaculately clean and worth a dip if you don't feel like going into town. They have free bikes for patrons to use which are well worth taking advantage of as the main town is about 10 minutes ride away. However, it's so flat around Hoi An that you can spend a very rewarding day biking around the islands that surround it and observing local daily life.

This homestay is beautiful and will certainly help to recharge your batteries as it has such a relaxing setting. If you need to always stay within the hustle and bustle of things then you should book somewhere else. If you're tired and need to rest for a few days on your trip up or down the country then stay here and just relax. Above all though, enjoy Hoi An, it's completely different to anywhere else in Vietnam.

“Rooms need updating but the garden and food is wonderful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Where to start with the Betel?
Well if you were to mark it on the rooms in terms of their comfort and functionality and taking the price into consideration you would have to score it poor. The bathrooms are really shabby and hot water is patchy. The room resembles the kind of place we stayed in backpacking in India 10 years ago for a fraction of the price. OK now for the positives. The welcome is great, juice and cookies and the atmosphere is calm and zen like. The food, particularly the breakfasts were the best we had in our whole trip and meals are taken in a beautiful covered area in the centre of tripical gardens. The pool looks like somthing out of a design magazine and herbs and vegetables are grown on site. The free bikes are a great touch and really nothing is too much trouble. Yes it is 20 - 25 minute walk or 10 mins on a bike into Hoi An and probably we would stay in town next time. So although we wouldn't stay there again and can recommend it to others.

“Family feel, great welcome, beautiful setting.”

Stay here if you can reserve a bungalow. The rooms in the house are damp and dark. It's expensive at 65 dollars for the type of room, but the pool, garden and hospitality makes up for the lack of fresh design in the rooms. Free bicycles, good yoghurt and muesli breakfast, great help booking train and taxis, super welcome. Invite for family dinner for free because we stayed 3 nights. Birds and flowers in garden make things feel relaxed and pretty.

“Our most pleasant accommodation in Vietnam”

As part of a 3 week Vietnam holiday in Nov-Dec 2011, we stayed 3 nights here, having come by car from Hue. We booked based on online recommendations and certainly recommend further.
This homestay is charming and certainly more exotic than a conventional hotel. Dong was was extremely helpful and friendly. He suggested the day tour to My Son, which we did and it was a highlight.
We knew Betel was a little way out of town, and for us this was one of the attractions. We walked a number of times into town and availed ourselves of the free bikes to go to the beach and the river.
Breakfast was first class as was our invitation to a family dinner. 10 out of 10.

“Beautiful Gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We booked this hotel based on a recommendation from a couple we had met while travelling in Vietnam.
We loved the atmosphere as the gardens and landscaping are just so beautiful. We were welcomed with a fruit drink and were treating with excellent customer service.
Dong was super friendly and was able to help us with everything we needed. He booked our bus out of town for us also.
The hotel is a bit away from the core of Hoi An but we used the free bikes they have to get into town. It was a fun experience.
We took cabs at night and as they are super cheap it's not bad at all!

We stayed 2 nights and the first night we stayed in the room upstairs. Nice furniture, clean and the shower was actually separate from the toilet! A plus in Vietnam!

They give you a fruit plate with some hot water for tea :)

Our second night we moved to one of the bungalow rooms which had a front porch and was close to the pool. We liked that room a lot better but this one of course was more money than the previous.

The pool area was beautiful and clean.

Breakfast was yummy! Fresh fruit, banana pancakes, omlets

Overall a very good experience.
