We have stayed at the Pho Hoi Resort on 2 occasions now, once in 2010 and again in 2011.
The location is really what makes this place, it is a small resort with a range of accomodation styles available. On both occasions, we have had bungalows, which afford a measure of privacy and are less noisy.
Travel in Vietnam is always a bit of a lottery, thats one of the attractions and the Pho Hoi resort is no exception. Most of the staff are helpful and goi out of their way to make your stay pleasant, the exception seems to be upon checkout - on both occasions this has become adversarial over queried costs (wrong on both counts).
It is beautiful to wake up alonside the river with the fishermen and people coming into the daily markets - one of the best times of the day.
On the downside, dont eat in the resort. Breakfast is ok, but as for other meals?...one of the great things about Hoi An is its variety of eating options so there is no real need to settle for overpriced (by Viet standards) and poorly prepared food.
Always plenty of hot water, however water quality varies from ordinary to terrible.
Beds are typically hard, and this can be an issue.
If staying in the "old" part of the resort ( the double story rooms), make sure that you check the room out before accepting it. The standard of maintenance varies greatly by all reports. Also ensure on checkin that you do indeed get the standard of room that you have booked or paid for.....these guys love the "up sell"...and half the time chances are you have already paid for it!
