Quite dated, dark and musty. The shower was on the side of a bathtub aimed at the bathroom floor, so a shower curtain was essential, as the floor was very slippery when wet. It took an hour and several phone calls early in the morning to get a shower curtain, and when it came there were no rings on it so it was no use. "I come back later" was the last I heard, but the curtain was there when I returned to the hotel that evening.

The room was dark, as the windows were shuttered. Opening the shutters meant no security; the inner windows were unable to be locked. There were no insect screens, and there were big gaps in the windows meaning mosquitos could not be shut out. I found quite a few in the bathroom each day, and resorted to burning a coil each night. Mattresses and pillows were fairly thin and hard.

The remote for the television worked intermittently. The exchange rate for money at the front desk was not particularly good.

I can't comment on whether this place is value for money as I stayed here as part of a group tour and don't know what it cost. As others have said, it's about five hundred metres from town, across a bridge and along a dusty or muddy road.

I would not recommend the Van Loi to anyone visiting Hoi An, as there are many more options in Hoi An, both more budget-friendly and/or charming. (And for just a little more money, you can get a far nicer experience.) Our trip to My Son, which we booked through the hotel, cost 4 times more than what others on the SAME trip paid. Our room smelled quite strongly of mold. While mold is difficult to avoid in the tropics, here it was also due to the hotel having been flooded, and not fully repaired. The rooms (we changed, but the improvement was minimal at best). I do wish the owner had spent money on the cavernous, unfinished looking rooms rather than on showy furniture and decorations in the lobby. While the staff warmed up after a few days, I did not find them friendly compared to other places where we'd stayed during our 5 weeks' worth of travel throughout Vietnam. The breakfast was plentiful, however.

This was my second stay at the Van Loi Hotel and it was just as enjoyable as the first one. The hotel staff is young and friendly. They work hard to make sure your stay at thier hotel is a pleasent one. The buffet breakfest which comes with the room is the best around Hoi An. Dinner on the roof top terrace with that great view of the area is fabulous particularly at night.

If you stay over 5 or 6 days you will find yourself making friends and getting know the culture of Vietnam upclose. A daily walk around in the Village of Cam Nam is a wonderful way to experience daily life in the Vietman. Everyone is so busy and you can see the different trades as you pass by the different house and shops which usually are combined. You should stop at one of the several coffee shops to have one of those delicious glasses of coffee, which will surely give you a chance to learn a few Vietnamese words.

In the evening I usually try to stop at the Star Bar located on the hotel's 5th floor terrace. The view of the Hoi An area, cold beer and great music will leave you with lasting memories of your stay in Vietnam.

After my original hotel had been overbooked the Van Loi hotel was recommended to me as a reasonable second choice. It didnt take long for me to be grateful that my first choice was unavailable.
The Van Loi is set a little apart from the main part of town over a bridge but is a pleasant 10 minute walk to the centre of Hoi An. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and my standard room was a good size with a spacious bathroom and very clean.
One of the best things about this hotel is the breakfast terrace on the top floor, and not just for the all round views either. The buffet has an egg station where you choose how you would like your fresh eggs cooked, western, asian and continental fare that would put many a 4 or 5 star hotel to shame so is not a place to stay if you are on a diet. Internet is available next to reception and there is a small pool too. An airport transfer was easily arranged from Danang at a reasonable rate which takes around 40-45 minutes.
This is one hotel that I will definitely return to, a charming place in a charming town.
