“Good location, no musty smell, staff good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We thought this hotel ticked all the boxes for our stay in Hoi An. Our room on the 3rd floor (no lift) was comfortable, clean and quiet. Window looked out onto the street. The door led out onto a very pleasant sitting area overlooking the pool. The staff were friendly and helpful if we needed anything and then left us alone, which suits us. Breakfast was good. Location very convienient for the old town. We booked online through Agoda for $24 a night. You could probably get cheaper in Hoi An, but we were happy with our choice.

“Musty smell, damp feel,sneaky staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Our journey to this hotel was prompted by an aborted airport landing in Dong Hoi (more north)forcing us to land in Danang and then venture onto Hoi An.

At the airport we met these two Vietnamese guys who were driving a hotel van back to Hoi An, with whom we negiotiated a ride. We told them of our needs for a hotel given our situation. They lied to us by saying that all hotels in Hoi An were full and reccomended we stay at the Thanh Van a nice two star for $30 a night,They and the hotel staff capitilized on our emrgencey situation charging us $30 a night for an $18 room(neighbours told) no doubt splitting the profit......sneaky!!!

Lesson learned...
Fellow tourists, never have a 2nd party negiotiate your room for you because you will be paying a huge commision. Furthermore, never believe the lie that there are no rooms available.Get a ride into town in a neighbourhood where there are several hotel options and check things out for yourself.A half an hour spent checking things out will be a worthwhile investment.

Anyways..

To the western eye the layout of the room was OK and $30 seemed great that was until one noticed the average market price that the many hotels around the corner were offering. With $20 being the average 2 star price and all having vacancies, the lie was soon quickly discovered. This is not about being cheap, this is about paying fair market value for the area you are staying in and not being lied to that there are no other vacancies available.

In fairness the rooms/hotel do really look OK and could compete with the other $20 places in the neighbourhood. The problem with the rooms however, was a prevailing musty smell and a damp feel while sleeping.Hoi An is known for its floods and some of the hotels just can't seem to shake off the musty smell no matter what they do. This is one of them and the problem is prevalant in Hoi An, so do a sniff test before renting a room anywhere in Hoi An.That very night we were on the lookout to change our accomodation asap.

If the hotel could rid themselves of the musty smell it would be a good hotel (3 rating) nothing more, nothing less. the overall layout is OK, the rooms equipped OK and they offer free computers and an average breakfast, as well as a swimming pool.

We found much better accomodations just out the door about a two minute walk away at the Thanh Binh 3 hotel just around the corner with a much larger, non smelly room with a balconey for $25 a night. Not sure why they aren't rated higher because they've obviously made improvements and both my wife and I were happy with our 3 day stay there, as were the other tourists we talked to. Feel free to read my review on it and avoid the Thanh Van at all costs.

Sniff sniff....

Room Tip: Ask them if they have one that doesn't smell musty

“Good breakfast, average rooms, unaccommadating staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

Breakfast is included and while it's not great, there is plenty of fruit, pastries, and tea/coffee available. The rooms are average in my experience, though judging from the pictures there were some much nicer options available. I would look at several rooms if you're booking here.

What truly drives me to provide a "poor" rating of this hotel is the staff. I found them to be unfriendly and unaccommadating, with a sort of "we have plenty of business without yours" attitude.

It rained the first few days while we were in Hoi An, and though our bathroom displayed a sign warning against loaning the umbrellas in our room, there were no umbrellas to be found. My husband advised the front desk of this fact, not wanting any issues to arise upon check out, but was told our room didn't come with umbrellas.

When the rain did not let up, I requested an umbrella from the front desk, offering to pay extra but was told none were available.

Upon checkout, we were delayed by the same staff member who accused us of stealing umbrellas :( (really?!)

Additionally, we purchased tour tix to My Son, a car ride to Danang airport, and flights to Saigon and Con Dao through the front desk through a long and tedious experience interrupted by personal phone calls, side conversations, and other staff distractions.

We paid more for these services than we would have elsewhere, and the "convenience" of doing it through this Lonely Planet reccommended hotel was not worth it... Shop around.

“Enjoyed our stay”

The set up was really lovely! The rooms were gorgeous - even with small details like flower petals on the bed! They have good customer service, friendly and helpful staff. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

“Nice place to stay, great location and breakfast buffet is amazing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Thanh van hotel 1 is a nice place to stay web visiting hoi an. The location is very good, near the old town with the lovely restaurants near the riverside. Staff is friendly but a bit pushy to arrange things there, like bus ticket and some tours. Don't do that because they are overcharging! We had a nice stay with clean rooms and the breakfast buffet is lovely!
