My wife & I spent our anniversary at Troutbeck and were not thrilled by the service and quality of the room. Upon arrival, we entered the reception area with no one on duty, but on a table nearby was an envelope with our name on it which included our room number (no key was in the envelope as there are no key locks). The problem was our room was not in the main building and had no idea where to go as there are 4 seperate buildings. We wandered inside the main building for a while looking for help when we finally stumbled upon an employee outside smoking a cigarette. He looked at our room assignment and said that our room was not available as the prior guest was staying late. (Good thing we didn't find the room, lord knows what we could have seen)
We were given a pricier room in the main building, only to find it was run down and the seperate bathroom was no longer "rustic", it was just old! No matter...we played a little tennis then drove to Millbrook Winery (a must visit) and then got back for dinner at the Troutbeck Restaurant
The restaurant review in Zagat sounded great, so we were looking forward to a nice dinner. The menu was quite limited and ordinary and the specials (which I had and was good) but the service was lacking as the wait staff were most definitely HS students.
The next morning, we had a scant continental breakfast and upon leaving, we tried to ask the staff a question, but to no avail, as no one was around. We again searched but gave up and just left.
All in all, for the $$$, it was so-so. If you are looking for a nice getaway in the region, look around for something else.
