We stayed here in Feb 2012 and are a couple with two small daughter (ages 4 & 1). We'll be going back in the future.
Our standard room was on the 2nd floor (reception level), had two queen size beds, excellent finishing and had a great view over the palm trees out towards the sea. I'd probably recommend being 4th floor or above if you really love your views.
Before arriving I had lots of boring questions that needed answering. Tatiana on reception was brilliant for this and was hugely helpful when we were there.
The service was fantastic with a special mention going to Sam from Togo who made up our room every day. He was always smiling away and the little touch of making a different shaped animal out of towels left on our 4 year-old's bed every day was a lovely touch.
The grounds are truly spectacular with loads of brilliant pools (some heated some not), a water-slide for the kids (and me) and the sandy cove was stunning.
We didn't try any of the restaurants apart from the buffet because there was no need. We're not even buffet people and tend to get bored but there was no chance of that here. Every night had a different theme and the choice was just incredible. The staff in the restaurant were fantastic with the kids - especially Roselee with the white-rimmed glasses who we're very thankful for keeping our 1 year-old amused for a few mins every night so we got to eat together even briefly.
The one slight disappointment was the restaurant manager, Zawareh, who curtailed a priceless moment of child innovation as a bunch of them started rearranging the kids corner chairs to play a game. It was a shame for several sets of parents that night and he doesn't respond well to customer feedback either.
All-in-all this place is great and well worth the drive out of Dubai. I hope they keep the standards high for many years to come as this place is excellent.
