“Basic but clean - fantastic location.”

I booked the Mert as part of a package holiday so I’m not too sure of its exact cost, but the overall holiday cost inc. flight was very low, so I assume the hotel was very reasonably priced.

Stayed in September, when the resort of Marmaris is still lively, but consists more of couples than children and groups of students.

The room itself was spotlessly clean, ample-sized, with a clean, well-equipped bathroom (the lack of shower curtain was a little distressing, as it turns the bathroom into more of a wet room, but not a major issue). There was A/C at no extra charge, and a safe that cost 20 Lira (about £8) to hire for the week.

Unfortunately, our safe broke and our valuables were temporarily locked in…staff sorted the problem out quickly but blamed us. To be completely honest, it had been showing signs of breakage since day 1, and we kind of manhandled it into a working state, rather than reporting the problem straight away. We were refunded 10 Lira and given a new safe at no extra cost, which I considered to be fair.

We had a lovely little balcony that offered a sea view, and we spent many a chilled moment sitting out there. There is also a well-sized, clean-looking swimming pool, but we didn't use it, as the beach/sea is so close.

Breakfast was included in our room rate, but was very basic, consisting of bread and jam. Tasty though it was, it didn’t really hit the spot, but no major complaints, as decent meals can be purchased for very low prices, so we self-catered the whole time.

The hotel is situated a 30 second walk from the beach, and a minute or so in the other direction is a decent-sized supermarket within a shopping centre (which also has a cinema), as well as dozens of independent local shops selling the usual wares of Turkey – clothes, video games, jewellery, etc.

All in all, a decent hotel in a fantastic location, that I’d happily return to.

“Nice location..basic room but all you need...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

We went for a cheap getaway so we didn't expect the hotel to be the best but we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were really nice and even though it was towards the end of the season they were still making an effort. The one thing we found is that the bar bills didn't always tally with what we had drunk and there was no such thing as a receipt in the bar! The foreign exchange places over there are also out to scam the English, we found this out when we checked our money after leaving the place only to find we were 400 TL short! This put a downer on the holiday really as you need to keep tabs and not relax knowing that they will take the last penny out of you given the chance. The cleaners were ok but all they did was fold up the sheets and change the towels then on our last day the cleaner for our floor had the cheek to moan that we only left her a little tip! Totally and utterly rude!
Oscar (Umid) and Taleb the bar staff were lovely and made an effort to get to know you. I will say it made a difference that we got to know people in the hotel and there were a lot of English people who wanted to get to know each other. There wasn't a lot going on as far as entertainment was concerned but the weather was beautiful so we tended to sit around the pool where they played music. The prices of the drinks were a little steep when you compared it to the supermarket across the road, yet you aren't allowed to bring your own drinks to the pool.
Breakfast was not worth bothering with unless you like rubber cheese and scrambled egg swimming in dishwater! We knew it wasn't going to be full english cooked breakfast so we just had bread and jam and then had a brunch later on. The hotel put on a Turkish night which was a laugh and the staff worked really hard to make sure everything went ok for us all. Ok the bbq wasn't brilliant but I think most of the money went towards the belly dancers etc.
Overall, I would say the hotel was basic but it was all we needed for our stay. All I will point out and warn is the manager of the restaurant next door to the hotel is a pain and he will hassle you everytime you walk out of the hotel! We would definitely book to go back to the Mert if we return to Marmaris but would book a taxi transfer next time as the mini bus driver was an absolute maniac travelling at speeds of 140km/h in 50km/h areas!
