I often travelled to Turkey on business, so this was one holiday I was particularlay looking forward to. We arrived early in the morning, the hotel has seen better days, but otherwise no complaints.
We paid the extra for air con as recommended. However, the air con only covers one of the bedrooms, my children’s. We slept on a put-up in the kitchen which was hot, seriously hot… And, as we later found out loud. The room was overlooking the bar area, over the speakers for the music, which goes on until midnight. As we were with young children we were hoping to be able to get some sleep, but it was impossible due to the heat and noise. I had an app on my phone and measured it lying on the bed, it was 90dB, the equivalent of a lawnmower.
We asked to change rooms but were told no chance. The heat they understood, but the noise was to be expected, and it was everywhere, we were surely here to party? Actually we were here for a family holiday, and the kids were stressed about going back to a noisey room every night. Eventually they moved us to the other side of the hotel and it was a massive difference. So if you want to sleep before midnight, avoid a room by the bar / swimming pool.
As for the area it was full of ‘Brit’ bars, serving Full English Breakfasts, etc. I asked for some Turkish food in one restaurant and was told “come back tomorrow”, even the beer was British. Despite the unfortunate lack of Turkish food, the quality was generally good around the Hotel.
We did many day trips, the boat trips in particular are good value for money. Remember to barter for everything from excursions to drinks and food.
Turkey is a great place, but I think if you’re staying here you’re missing out on the chance to sample its culture. If the only thing you want from Turkey is the weather, then this is perfect, if you want to feel like you’re in Turkey go elsewhere.
Room Tip: For sleep avoid the pool / bar area.
