RESTAURANT: Ayhan restaurant & Bar.
Kemal S. Elgin Bulvari No. 78
LOCATION: From the Taj Mahal walk towards Icmeler. It is on the right about 200 metres along. It is the restaurant/bar right before the cash machines. The restaurant name is not easy to spot as there are two large trees in front.
STYLE: International with a good Turkish dish section.
SET MEALS: Yes. This is for either a steak or chicken/pasta/pizza meal. Starter was Nan bread (Puffy) bread with dips. Main course was “any” steak 19.95 lira (£7.12p) or any chicken, pasta or pizza dish for 14.95 lira (£5.34p). there was also a desert mentioned but I don’t remember what it was except that it contained ice-cream
DATE OF VISIT: 01/09/11
DISHES TRIED: Before the starters came we were served with the “puffy” (Nan) bread, garlic butter, chilli dip and a yogurt with mint dip. The butter and dips were very generous portions and we were unable to finish them.
I am unable to remember what Jean had for a starter but do remember that she enjoyed it and managed to finish it. I ordered the calamari, which came on a bed of shredded lettuce and was surrounded with slices of cucumber and carrot. The batter was thin and very crisp and the squid it contained was moist and tender.
For our main courses Jean ordered the Tagliatelle Ayhan and I ordered the Lamb Kavarma. The tagliatelle was of monumental proportions and was topped with a good serving of sliced fillet steak in a lovely cream sauce. Once again this was such a huge portion that Jean was totally unable to finish, although I noticed she did not leave any of the steak! My Kavarma came in a traditional Turkish metal dish with a lid. This was set over a small burner to keep it warm. Under the lid was the Kavarma. A mixture of cubed lamb, onions, peppers and mushrooms was simmering in a light but very savoury gravy. Around the edge of this mixture was a large portion of big, real chips, a portion of mash and another of rice. There was also a serving of mixed vegetables. The meal was outstanding. Full of flavour with very tender meat.
We both agreed that it was the best international meal we have during our holiday.
We retuned on a Sunday to try the lunch but the restaurant was fully booked and we could not get a table. So book if you can!
DRINKS TRIED: One large bottle of Efes and a glass of red wine for me and two glasses of the red wine for Jean. The wine was lovely and fruity.
TOTAL PRICE: 76 lira. (£27.14)
STAFF: Quick, well trained and as always smiling.
OWNER: Not known.
AMBIANCE: Although the restaurant is by the main Marmaris to Icmeler road, the presence of a couple of very large trees gives an illusion of seclusion and lessens the traffic noise. The seating is comfortable. However, I imagine the large screen TVs could be a distraction when sport is being shown. Fortunately for us there was nothing on at the time of our main visit.
For international cuisine this was the best restaurant that we tried on this visit to Turkey.
We have no hesitation in recommending this to all who enjoy good food.
