Whilst I enjoyed my stay at Nicholas Lodge, I can completely understand why others would not. I am not at all fussy, and I am OK with eating out sometimes and being served Turkish food in Turkey. Other people want English food - well stay in England then. I am going to give you a review of the hotel - not an opinion as these differ from person to person.
People: Staff are nice, little English spoken by most. Management is bad, NO English spoken WHATSOEVER.
Food: Turkish breakfast - consists of tea, coffee, salad, hard boiled eggs, ham, cheese, eggy bread, plain bread, small turkish frankfurter type sausages. Lunch - tea, coffee, soup, 1 or 2 mains with rice, or pasta, lots of bread and fresh salad available. Dinner - as lunch. The mains we were served in the whole 10 days were chicken, chicken, chicken, chicken, kebab meat/burger type thing, kebab meat/burger type thing, kebab meat/burger type thing, chicken, kebab meat/burger type thing. Although it was always the same meat, it was in a different sauce every time. Once we had chicken soup for lunch, which was quite nice, then we had chicken in mushroom sauce for dinner. It would be a suprise if the dinner sauce was not the leftovers from lunchtime's soup - but in actual fact we all agreed it was very very nice and the best meal we had there in 10 days!
Rooms: Our shower door was not connected. So everytime we used it, we had to balance it. Our beds were made everyday, bins emptied, new toilet roll's left. The light in our corridor did not work for the whole 10 days we wre there. Other people also had this issue, asked for it to be sorted and it was, straight away. We didnt even bother to ask, a light out is not going to make any sort of difference to my holiday. We came to the conclusion that the hot water was heated by solar panels. In the morning, there was none. Daytime and early evening, we had hot water. A few people did tell us that one evening, around 7:30, the water ran out altogether. Not just the hot, literally no water coming from the taps. I can't verify this.
Hotel entertainment - There are about 3 bars in the hotel. The only one open was the pool bar. They only serve lager on tap, local vodka, local gin, some local wine. There are imported spirits avalable to buy. On the 1st night they ran out of vodka at 10pm. There was non available until 6pm the following day. Probably about 3 nights out of 10 you were given the opportunity to stay on at the pool bar after 11 and buy your drinks, at about 5 lira each. Music played was a mix of English and Turkish. The gym/sauna was not accessible. Even if it was, it only had about 4 pieces of equipment to use. The pool was clean, sunbeds widely available (it was September after all).
Locally - I have rated this hotel not suitable for older people. I more mean elderly or less mobile. This is only due to the hill which leads to the Hotel. If you are willing to pay 3-5 lira each way for a taxi everytime, then that's up to you. There is a shop at the bottom of the hill that does all sorts from cigarettes to water to fresh bread to hair gel. There are a couple of quiet bar/restaurants also. Further up there are lots more. A 45 minute walk to Hisaranu or 5-10 minutes on a bus. Very busy, loads of restaurants, bars, shops, beauty places. Fab town, can't wait to visit again!
Didn't visit the also nearby town called Fethiye. Never made it to the Monday market in Hisaranu or the Tuesday market to Fethiye.
Did not visit the private beach owned by the hotel. Although they pick you up and drop you off for free, we were told there is absolutely nothing there to even get a drink.
Visited Olu Deniz beach. Quite a few shops and restaurants to choose from. Do take 5 minutes to shop around - prices literally varied from 6 lira to 12 lira for a breakfast, and 3 lira to 8 lira for a beer. You wouldn't think so as it was such a small stretch, but really, they do. The beach is not very sandy. Invest in some jelly type shoes before going or pay 1/3 more at the beach shop. 6 lira for a sunbed on the beach, 4 for an umbrella.
If booking any days out such as boat trips or aqua parks, book with Carolyn Tae Fun in Hisaranu. Cheapest rates.
Top Tip:
Big Brother restaurant in Hisaranu - English and Turkish food, good prices, great food. The Terrace restaurant in Hisaranu is also a lovely place to eat, offering a full English breakfast for just 5 lira! Be cautious of Moonlight - very expensive and food not that great. Make sure you shop around.
