Well what can I say? This was our first holiday in 2 years and we were REALLY looking forward to it. We arrived at Cenk Bey in the afternoon and were greeted by a friendly member of staff who checked us in quickly and carried our bags up to the top floor (No lift). Our room was very small and had only enough space for a bed and a wardrobe. Luckily we didn't go on holiday to stay in the 7 x 7 room. Decided to have a shower...No hot water and only a drip from the shower head. Plenty of cold water which soon had the bathroom flooded as the plughole in the floor simply didn't appear to be able to deal with any sort of water near it.
The rooms can only be described as basic and nothing more - as is the whole hotel - a one star at very best in dire need of a really good tidy up and refurb.
Food... Typical Turkish mese type starters which were very tasty with a choice of around 10 different things. NO choice of main course. There was one dish and if you didn't like it, you didn't eat there. The staff have been trained to within an inch of their lives to dish out a bare minimum portion of food - For example soup. 1 ladle full would be appropriate - not here, a quarter of a ladle in the bowl at best, just covering the bottom of the dish. That said, all the staff including the owners ate the same food - however they were all able to help themselves and managed an adult portion. Don't get me wrong, we are not at all faddy eaters and avoid any sort of English food wherever we holiday, but we do expect a reasonable portion and a bit of variety which simply doesn't happen at this hotel.
Drinks were no different and my husband and I were horrified when we asked for a glass of red wine each, to see it being measured into a SHOT glass before being transferred into a huge wine glass! All at top price. I honestly thought they were only going to ask us to taste it before pouring a full glass, but no, that was it. All spirits were poured out of sight under the counter. I once asked for a vodka and a seperate mixer. The vodka never appeared and the mixer was taken away to apparently have it added, which I seriously doubt it was. We do not make a habit of moaning about our holidays, but after having read the glowing reviews of this hotel, we honestly wondered if we were staying at the same place. All the Brits we met during our two week stay said exactly the same thing. How a place with such brilliant write ups just wasn't! - Yes the staff were friendly enough, but only if you were giving them something. Cenk never spoke once, not even hello although Andrea did say hello most days. It appears that this hotel caters for our German chums in the main. There were a large group of them staying at the same time as ourselves and nothing was too much trouble for the staff where they were concerned. Breakfast was from 8am - 10am.and typically Turkish with olives, honey, cheese and boiled eggs. Turn up by 8.30 at the latest or there is very little left and it is not replenished. We turned up at 9am one morning. There was no cheese, no eggs, no melon and when I asked for some, the staff simply shrugged his shoulders and said 'no more'. One man asked for a 3 egg omelette and was denied and was told no one could have more than 2. From a business point of view this hotel should be making a bomb as there are certainly absolutely no frills for customers. As mentioned earlier, I honestly now cannot understand why/how people are raving about this hotel. If you want the most basic of basics and don't mind 1 star, then it's ideal. If you want any more than that, then you would be better off elsewhere. Fortunately being stalwart Brits, we made the best of it all and had a pleasant break in the sun.
