“Perfect for elopement”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

We decided to "elope" in some way, with only 25 guests including my husband and I.

I spoke with Laurie on the phone at first and found her to be very pleasant. We communicated via email and she ALWAYS responded back promptly with all the answers I needed. She went above and beyond, especially with the flowers...

When we visited the place, it was beautiful. The outside trellis was simple and very pretty, right by a small stream. The Gathering Place was BREATHTAKING. Absolutely beautiful space with light streaming in from the ceiling and the windows. Big adirondack chairs lined the deck with a view of the greenery around the property. The huge columns were lined with lights and greenery. It was air conditioned, which is nice for a hot summer wedding. The fireplace was also a very romantic spot to get married if inclimate weather should arise. I was almost hoping for rain on our wedding day because Laurie painted a picture of candles in and around the fireplace that sounded so romantic. We snatched it up.

On the day of our wedding day, even though we were a small player as compared to the much larger wedding later that day, Laurie allowed me to come a half hour early to change into my gown. Now, the room provided wasn't what I would call luxury, but it was perfect nonetheless. My photographer took pictures in the room, on the small balcony, even in the shower(hehe). I thought it was a perfect little room to get ready in. We were married down by the stream. Laurie took care of everything, letting everyone know where to go and what to do (as we had no wedding party, no rehearsal was necessary). She made sure the groom and grooms mom got their flowers, which by the way, were incredible (I think she uses Bella Fleur in Altamont). I had Gardenia's and mint leaves... gorgeous. He had a silk lilac that didn't look in the least like silk. Laurie directed me and my fathers to where we needed to go and provided someone to cue the music for me to walk. The ceremony was short and sweet, the JOP was a wonderful woman. We had some pictures by the wishing well and under the trellis. Then we proceeded to the Gathering Place for our dance, our cake and champagne toast... which I might add, was all included in the elopement package. She put linens down and really made the space feel like an actual wedding not just a quickie elopement. She went above and beyond what she needed to do to make our day very special. She may be abrupt, and a bit opinionated, but she knows her stuff and I liked how straightforward she was with us. And might I add, we had a beautiful ceremony, cake, champagne toast, officiate, etc, all for about $1,000. You really can't beat it.

Laurie was a wonderful hostess, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to elope but want something nicer than a town hall wedding. I have heard nothing but pleasant things about this place and wanted to share my pleasant experiece. A+ in my book.

“Pretty place but the owner is difficult”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2010

I had my wedding there in 2008. We booked it because the "gathering space" really is beautiful. Laurie, the owner, has very strong opinions. She has many years of experience and is not afraid to tell you this. While she could be rude at times she was generally helpful. The land does need work though. They have many old cars and unkempt grounds. If you have an outside ceremony don't expect much out of the room you get ready in. I had to turn all my photos into black and whites so you couldn't see her discolored walls and bedding. There was also dog poop in the area where guest were sitting (I know a bride that stepped in it on her wedding day at this location).
All in all we did have a great wedding. Expect to put a lot into making the place look nice. If you are a perfectionist this is not the place for you.

“Very Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2009

As stated in several reviews, the owner is extremely uptight and not open to ideas or suggestions. She is VERY set in her ways and regardless to the requests she finds a way to negatively and rudley tell you what SHE WILL do and how it will be. We attended another event there recently and the service was terrible with only one bartender to serve over 100 guests. After waiting for a long time for a drink the bartender informed us that they were out of soda and beer! After the bar was restocked much later it happened again and again throughout the evening. It was apparent that they were very under staffed and not organized. Needless to say we will not be having our wedding or any event there in the future.

“Unique & Extraordinary Wedding Reception Venue (& Ceremony Location)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2009

We were fortunate enough to be able to hold both our ceremony and reception at the Appel Inn. After reading some of the sour reviews here, I had to comment on how wonderful a day it was for us, and our guests. The location is unique, fresh, and clean -- it was just what we wanted. Upon booking, the owner (Laurie), gave us a "Weddings 101" packet which helped us decide on vendors and offered recommendations. Throughout each stage of the planning, she was there to help if needed and on the day of, she allowed the bridal party to hide away in her beautiful house until it was time to go. I can't emphasize enough how easy Laurie was to work with, and we were able to have relax and enjoy our wedding day knowing that she and her husband would take care of any kinks with any of the vendors. Most of our guests were out of towners and we received so many compliments on this venue. The Appel Inn was the ideal place for our wedding ceremony and reception.

“Looked at this place for an engagement party”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2009

Our daughter and her fiance went with us, brides parents, to look at this location for their up coming engagement party. Although it was not a nice day we thought we would go there and just look, after all it was March and we knew not to expect too much in such dreary weather. We were pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by the owner, Laurie and her husband, in the Gathering House. Laurie explained that she and her husband used to host wedding in the Main House( I believe that is where the writers in 2005, below, are refering to) but had this area built to accomodate parties of all kinds. The area is just beautiful, sort of a mix of rustic and trendy. There is a large round room with windows surrounding, large fireplace and out door deck. Laurie sat with us, answering questions and showing us pictures of wedding that had taken place during each season of the year. She was very welcoming and down to earth in all of her advice, no pomp and circumstance, I personally like that since I am a no nonsense person. Very willing to work with us on each of our concerns be it the weather on the date, time of day, ventors etc. Would put outdoor heaters on the deck if the evening is chilly and adirondeck chairs around the fireplace and on the deck to accomodate guest who like the outdoors. There is a small lake in the back and a wedding staging area with custom benches for an outdoor wedding. After speaking to Laurie and her husband and viewing the place and outdoor area my daughter and her fiance, decided that they would have thier engagement party elsewhere and book this place for thier WEDDING DAY. It was just what they were looking for. I tried to convince them that they could have both here but I did not win that one. We do look forward to working with Laurie over the next months on the wedding plans. What a great experience and a wonderful place. Thanks Laurie see you soon.
PS ask about Laurie's agreement with the local Best Western Hotel for accomodations and a free shuttle for you guests.
