“Contender for the worst "hotel" I've ever stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

Let me caveat this by saying there is "new" and "old" Mevlana. I'm on a budget so went for the old side.
1) There is no air conditioning and no fan. You therefore need the window open all night. You are 25m from a main road, 25m from the bazaar, 50m from a mosque, so if you want to sleep don't pick this place. Ear plugs are vital, and even then the call to prayer will wake you up.
2) At this price in the rest of Turkey you would expect internet and breakfast. Forget about it.
3) There are no locks on the toilet doors or shower doors. Instead, there is a 1 metre long metal rod which you jam between the door and the wall (imagine barricading yourself in against zombies/Jack Nicholson).
4) There is no hot water on the 1st floor. There is no cold water on the 2nd floor. This creates certain problems for flushing toilets and showering. I'm happy to shower using half a cut-up coke bottle, but only in the middle of nowhere, not in a major city.

Ok, positives? It is a bed. It is cheap-ish. The old man who tried to solve the shower situation was sweet (result: half a coke bottle to douse myself).

Would I recommend this place to family and friends? Absolutely not.
Would I recommend this place to strangers?! Absolutely not.

Room Tip: Try the new side, or elsewhere.

“Recommend this Hotel for an Overnight Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2011

We unexpectedly needed a bed late at night and this hotel served the purpose. Friendly staff, small and clean room, 1400 TV channels and breakfast is supplied. For an overnight stay this hotel is more than adequate. This hotel is the one on the left hand side of the street as you walk up from the main road.

“smoky and filthy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

Avoıd thıs hotel at all costs. We ıntended to stay at Hotel Rumı but ıt was full. We went to Hotel Derya but decıded agaınst ıt because we thought we could do better on the prıce. What a mıstake. Hotel Derya was clean and nıce. Otel Mevlana had dırty bathroom, dısgustıngly dırty rugs and bathrooms and a very shabby breakfast. We paıd 75 Turkısh Lıra. Do not stay here.

“OK for this price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

We got to the Mevlana pretty late when it was already dark. So we didn't have much choice regarding the accommodation. (The hotel we where looking for and which was rated very well at Trip Advisor's was closed because of holidays.) They charged 60 TL (= about 27 Euros) with breakfast and we believe that this is nearly the cheapest price you can get in Konya centre. The hotel is very well situated between the Alaeddin Mosque and the Mevlana. So you have the main tourist attractions in a short walking distance.
The room was small, but OK for us and clean. The guy at the reception didn't speak English or other foreign languages. (We had the impression that the hotel works only with Turkish guests.) They let me park my bike right in front of the entrance. So we were quiet about it and sure to continue our journey the next day.
The breakfast was not very rich, but also OK. There's free internet access.
