“Service-oriented staff & great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2011

Naz Han's location is great: walking distance from the St. John basilica, the citadel, the mosque, and the museum, and a short drive from Ephesus. It's also right in downtown Selcuk, easy walking distance to many restaurants.

I can't say enought great things about the manager, Nazmi Karadayi. He went out of his way to help us. We had received a speeding ticket at a speed trap outside of Konya. Nazmi graciously offered to take the ticket and our payment to the local government office and handle paying it so we wouldn't have to take time out of our touring schedule. As it turned out, my husband and his passport were required, so Nazmi made a second trip to the office, this time accompanied by my husband after we returned from touring. Nazmi was invaluable in providing translations so my husband could understand what was needed to pay the ticket. Bureaucracies are bureaucracies the world over, and without Nazmi's help, we would have spent much more time dealing with the ticket.

Nazmi and his aunt were great hosts throughout our two night stay. Breakfasts were excellent and served individually based on the time we told them we would like to eat each morning. Naz Han's Istanbul-based owner is lucky to have such great caretakers at his hotel, since without them, we would have probably rated the hotel average vs. very good, despite the great location. Nazmi and his aunt's service made the difference for us. (Nazmi will be going to do his mandatory military service in the coming months, so he may not be there by the time you read this review.)

While the old Greek building housing the hotel was charming, it does have drawbacks: our room and the bathroom were small. In fact, the bathroom was so small that the toilet was in the shower! I experienced having a toilet in the shower various times 40 years ago when I travelled in Europe. However, I'm thinking Selcuk and certainly Turkey are too modern for such an arrangement in a hotel these days, 100-year old building notwithstanding... and certainly for the price of the room I would expect a more upscale bathroom. However, all was clean and the towels were not the usual air-dried boards we had been receiving at some other mid-priced hotels -- soft and sweet-smelling each day.

Internet was free, but depending on where we were in the room, reception was spotty. Outside in the courtyard Internet reception was fine.

“Friendly atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2010

Naz Han is a unique place - small and homely, characterful, with a very friendly atmosphere. The hosts Cemil and Nazmi became personal friends and offered helpful advice about touring the area. This included organising free transport to Ephesus and to the nearby Virgin Mary's House, and Nazmi accompanied us to the Saturday bazaar, ensuring that we made the best purchases and best prices.

The residence is almost opposite St John's Basilica, and with easy access to the town. Naz Han offered breakfast, which included home-grown olives. For other meals there were excellent eating places in town, within easy reach.

The room was clean and had all the facilities we needed. I think we had the best room with a balcony facing the front, with excellent views of Selcuk.

We would certainly return there, and were sorry we were only able to spend four nights.

“Simple but charming and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2009

Naz Han is a delightful guest house arranged round a courtyard. The staff are very friendly and ready to help with trips to Ephesus and other sights. The breakfast is ample, fresh and good quality. There is some noise from rooms on the street, and plumbing in the showers is rather old. But for the price, the Naz Han is a great place to stay, and right next door is Osman's carpet shop.

“Nice place, but quite noisy street”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

We stayed in Naz Han fro 3 nights. We really like the place. The owner is a nice person and gave us the hint for the best restaurant of Kofte, we ever tried in Turkey!
The place is very cosy, as the others here say here. but the position is quite unfortunate. Due to the continuous traffic in the up hill to the Historic museums, we found quite difficult to sleep longer than 8am.... at that time the tourist traffic starts.
We were not surprised to do not have service in the room.... almost none of the hotel we had in Turkey gave us this.
cleanness is OK.
we cannot rate high this place for the busy street position. but if you do not mind about noise, then this place is quite good indeed.

“Little gem but some gross mistakes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2009

Naz Han is a little gem, just few steps away from St. John's Basilica where he spent his last years of his long life and died. A place full of history. The courtyard and the little living room are so precious and cozy. Spotless rooms and, believe me, the best breakfast I've ever had not only in Turkey but in all my life. Please visit the amazing pottery shop beside, sharing the entrance of the nearby hotel Bella. I bought the most charming numbers to put on my house door. Extraordinary craftsmanship objects. The patron of Naz Han was in Istanbul for business and the young man who substitutes him was helpful but sometimes distant, bored and tired. Two unpleasant things: curfew (it's unbelievable but I was told to come back not later than midnight) and no room service (unforgivable and a real insult). Lonely planet did the right thing no to prize it with the author's choice in 2009 edition. To deserve that something more is needed. Stunning flowers and flea market' s souvenirs are not enough.
