Over the two weeks my wife and I were in Turkey, we stayed at four hotels. Tassaray in Urgup was the one disappointment.
The hotel is mostly patronized by tour groups, and everything is biased in their favour. They get the best rooms, the best tables in the dining hall, and the most attention from the staff. Towards individual travelers like us the hotel’s attitude was one of general indifference.
We were first allotted a room without AC and a non-functional TV set and telephone. When we pointed this out to the Reception desk, they sent a technician who agreed that the room had no AC, but advised us that the weather did not necessitate it. Why don’t we open the windows? he suggested. We insisted for a change in the room, and were eventually moved to a small one in a different part of the hotel, where, mercifully, things were in working order. At the Reception desk, too, the staff kept giggling among themselves, or continued their private telephone chats, quite oblivious of their customer’s presence.
In the large dining hall, 90% of the tables were “Reserved” for the tour groups, and we individual guests had to search for an available place in some remote corner of the hall far from where the food was laid out. The hot dishes was so very unappetizingly displayed that most of us (including the tour groups) stuck to salads. There was a generous spread of six desserts – all bland. Although we had paid for evening meals, we preferred to eat out at one of the open-air restaurants, where we received a genuinely warm welcome and excellent service.
The only redeeming features about this hotel were the general level of cleanliness and the smiles of the porters (bellboys) who were ever ready to help us with our baggage.
A memorable experience at Tassaray? Yes, but in a negative sort of way, I’m afraid. Individual travelers would be wise to give it the go-by.
