Located in the land of fairy chimneys, Les Maisons de Cappadoce is a gracious collection of Harvard-architect remodeled homes that has become its own neighborhood. We two stayed in La Studio Forge. We arrived there after two long flights and a long layover with an hour’s drive from Kayseri, the nearest airport. We were transported with joy to be anywhere, much less in our own home. We walked in to the open yet snug living room with its fire already laid in the fireplace and French doors opening out onto a sunny balcony with an inviting table for breakfast, bright red geraniums added in the foreground and, just beyond our very own fairy chimney. The bedroom was down the hall to the right with its closet, kilims, and folk art collection. The bathroom had its share of art plus counter space and a wonderful shower with a high tiled wall for privacy. The kitchen was well stocked. Fresh makin’s for breakfast (eggs, preserves, snacks, fruits) appeared in a basket each evening and, every morning, we heard a rustle at the door when the bakery-fresh bread was hung, warm, on the door. Our hosts, Sevim and Jacques, were marvelously hospitable and full of willingness to make connections, arrange tours, recommend the best place to make purchases and nearby places to feast. The take-off point for balloon rides was so close that we could see them every morning and hear their hot air whoosh as they ascended and descended.
As we headed out for our daily adventures, we loved walking on the “neighborhood” street, past the collection of ducks and kittens at the intersection nearby and up the hill to the Uçisar town center. The town itself is one of the attractions. It has just the right number of restaurants and shops along with its own castle and quick access to the more metropolitan Ürgüp as well as roads that head to every historic, scenic valley, town, and underground city.
Les Maisons de Cappadoce was one of the most comfortable, well-placed, elegantly designed, and artful B&Bs in which we have ever stayed—and that is going some.
