Les Maisons de Cappadoce (and Cappadocia itself) are no longer a secret -- indeed I would submit they are both top 10 destinations in the world (sans exaggeration!). So we won't repeat the general, fantastic details of the location(s), but just give a snapshot of our experience.
We stayed in Studio Kaya and our travelling partners above us in Maison Kaya. What we liked:
- Jacques and his wife Sevim's warm, low key reception into what is their personal (and incredible) house;
- Having a fire going in our room when we returned for dinner the first night (after a long drive from Antayla to Cappadocia) (and having it pre-set for the other nights - we had a warm, romantic fire each night which was great in early fall Cappadocia);
- The kitchen -- these are living quarters not hotel rooms -- there is a fantastic array of foods delivered every evening (and fresh bread in the morning) so that you can have a gourmet brekafast every day on your beautiful porch over looking the fantastic Pigeon Valley (we would make cafe au lait each morning, eggs and toast to go with our fresh fruit, yogurt, home made jams, local cheese, etc. etc., etc). The range of modern kitchen appliances complemented the local foodstuffs incredibly well (you could easily do your own barbeque on your personal outdoor grill, but we ran out of time to do that);
- The very comfortable bed and comforter (replete with local homedmade slippers);
- The best shower in 17 days in Turkey (very modern space with great water pressure and temperature);
- Wifi service!
- Room service (if you feel like eating dinner in, Jacques will arrange to have food brought down from the Center Cafe (see seperate review on Uchisar's best restaurant) (no styrfoam here -- comes covered on the restaurant's plates).
- All this and remember you are in a frickin' cave (esp if you are in Studio Kaya which is virtually 100% original cave walls). While there are many fancier rooms in Les Maisons we really liked Studio Kaya because it combined authenic cave dwelling with all of the space and amenities of the fancier Maisons (we know because our friends were right above us in Maison Kaya).
So enough said, we are huge fans of what Jacques and Sevim have created. Indeed Uchisar is the best place to stay in Cappadocia (right in the middle, but not nearly as touristy as Goreme and Urgup). And Les Maisons are best place in Uchisar (while Jacques was the first cave hotelier, there are now literally hundreds in the area).
Bonne route,
John
