“Perfect for a stay in Cappadokya”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My husband and I stayed here in the summer of 2008, and had a very good experience. The hotel is small and family run, and is set amongst the stone formations. Our room was actually built into the cave. The man who runs the hotel is very courteous, and picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel.

Overall, I don't think this was the fanciest hotel, but it was just what we needed to enjoy the beautiful and peaceful sunsets in Goreme. It was within walking distance of an open-air museum (of which I forget the name, but I highly suggest going to), and the internet cafe and Turkish bathhouse down the road. Breakfast was plentiful in the morning.

“kind and assuming service, nice rooms and close to everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

One of the better cave hotels, below the fancy priced places and above the pension's and hostels. We stayed 5 nights at Local Cave Hotel and would recommend for couples and families. We are a family of 4, two kids 7 and 8 and had a family room -- a double in one room with two twins in a connected other. The rooms were nicely appointed for the price point -- antique ottoman wood and tapestries. The hotel is a minute from the main street, not as far up the hill from most of the other hotels. Rooms are built right into the lava rock hillside and are cave like cool.

Harun, the host, is low key and easy going. He and his crew were always ready with a glass of apple tea and even a lift to the top of Rose Valley. They're not over the top smilly folks, just good casual people who will do whatever is asked. Laundry service was cold water/hang dry and only 15 TL. Beds were average comfortable. There is heating in each room, and windows that open into the pool view. We didn't like how the sheets fit -- they don't wrap around the edges of the mattress so end up bunching up beneath you in the night. Pillows could use an upgrade but weren't uncomfortable. The pool was a big attraction for the kids but isn't heated so unless it's smokin hot, it just makes for a nicer atmosphere. Ping pong table was a hit with our kids, as was the classic turkish outdoor covered carpet seating area above the pool. Breakfast was the usual turkish meat, cheeses, olives etc. but they did have corn flakes and milk -- rare to find cereal in turkey breakfasts.

The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is because of the bathrooms -- there was no fan or circulation and the water seems to sit in the shower/toilet so it smells after a while. Need to leave your windows open at some point during the day. If they fixed the bathrooms (which they are apparently upgrading), sheets and got better pillows, they could charge far more than 80 euros/night. That negative aside, for the price, jump on it.

Room Tip: All rooms seem good. Higher rooms will have less upper floor noise from bathrooms etc.

“The service was outstanding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

We stayed at the Local Cave House Hotel in June 2011 during a visit to Cappadocia. The service by Harun (the owner) and Cihan [I've seen his name spelled Jihan in other reviews, so I'm not sure which spelling is correct] was outstanding.

It started when we arrived before out room was ready. We were tired, as we had been up since 2 AM to get the necessary transportation to get to Goreme. Harun let us have breakfast and gave us another room to take a nap in, until our room was ready. He also changed the room from an upper level room, to one at the pool level, as my companion was feeling very tired with any physical activity. This turned out to be because she was severely anemic, and was developing stomach cancer.

Because she was having trouble eating anything, she requested soup and the bread she liked, several times. This meant Harun or Cihan had to go down to a local restaurant, and have the cook (their friend) make some special soup (not on the menu) for her, and bring it back up to the hotel. They did this several times. How's that for service?

The room at the hotel was good, and we had no problem with the renovated bathroom, and had no problem finding an electrical outlet to charge our camera batteries overnight. The hotel is not too far up in the hills, with an easy walk down into town, and a short walk (all uphill) to the viewpoint seen over the hotel.

The pool was refreshing, but was a constant depth (too deep for small kids to stand). This seems to be a common architectural style for swimming pools in Turkey, as we saw this in several hotels.

We took a hot air balloon ride with Sultan Balloons (recommended by Harun). This company starts earlier than all the other companies (before sunrise), and starts way out of town. (Don't depend 100% on a wake-up call. We didn't get ours, but we were up anyway). We had favorable winds and a fantastic flight down into and through Love Valley, and ended up landing right beside Love Valley.

Another day, we took a tour of the local area with Ali, who was very knowledgeable about the area, having lived in one of the caves as a kid. He also helped us find a luggage store in Avanos, where we could buy a new suitcase to replace the one the airline had destoyed on our trip into the area.

I would stay at this hotel again on another visit to Cappadocia.

“Overpriced and unwelcoming...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Local Cave Hotel, in their "luxury suite". We paid ~150 euro/night, and (at the time of booking) thought it was ok because a) it was billed as a luxury suite and the pictures looked great and b) we were staying in a cave (very cool)..... but of course once we reached Goreme we realized that pretty much every single hotel was a "cave hotel".

Positives:
1) location.......I would definitely stay in Goreme if you are going to Cappadocia (as opposed to Urgup or Uchsitar or wherever). Within Goreme, Local Cave hotel is nicely situated a few minutes walk to the shops and Goreme Open Air museum is within walking distance (~15-20 min walk).

2) swimming pool - although we ourselves didn't use the pool, other guests did and it appeared that not very many hotels have pools in Goreme. There was a nice sitting area (lounge chairs, cushions, with wifi in the central area)

3) Jihan, one of the staff, was very nice

Negatives
1) the bathroom. The bathroom looks really luxurious......but then you try to use it. There is no shower door!! (It was apparently broken and never replaced)...so you are standing under the spray, one side warm while your other side is freezing -- it is very very cool in the cave! Moreover, because there is no door, a large portion of the bathroom floor gets sopping wet. It's also very dim in the bathroom, which makes it hard to use during morning routines. There is also no alarm clock in the bedroom.

2) the bees and wasps at breakfast........hard to enjoy your breakfast while trying to avoid being stung. The breakfast itself seemed ok, but the milk was WARM (ugh, I almost threw up) and both my husband and I got severe upset stomach from it (so we were less inclined to eat breakfast on other days)

3) Wifi doesn't work in the rooms....only outside (not a big problem for us as we just went and sat by the pool and checked our email, but if you are staying there when it's cold, it may be a problem for you

4) Harun's attitude #1.... Harun was very welcoming towards us when we first arrrived. However when it became clear that we were not going to book trips through him, or if we did it was at the places we wanted (not necessarily where he wanted us to book), his attitude changed. Case in point: we use Rick Steves' guides frequently, and watch his show. I saw a clip where he was using Butterfly Balloons to go ballooning over Cappadocia. When we asked Harun to book through Butterfly, he told us they didn't have space and wanted us to use Royal Balloons. We said no,, we'll wait and see if a spot opens on Butterfly (as we had a few days there). I then emailed Butterfly enquiring of availability. Suddenly Butterfly had spots open.... at first I thought this could be just coincidence, but later experiences made me change my mind.

5)Harun's attitude #2 ... we booked a car and driver for a day to see other parts of Cappadocia (more affordable than paying for 2 people to get a tour). We did not konw that Harun would be the driver.........suffice to say my husband and I refer to this experience as the "Speed Tour of Cappadocia". Harun treated us as though we were an annoyance.

6) Harun's attitude #3... we asked Harun to book transport to the Kayseri airport so that we could be there 90 min prior, as was recommended through our reading. Harun insisted that 90 min was not necessary (repeatedly) and booked us transfer. The problem is it definitely was NOT enough time (and the transport being late didn't help). we literally had 4 MINUTES to spare while trying to get on our flight (9am flight and the only other flight out was at 4:30 pm that day). We almost missed our flight and would have been stuck in the Kayseri airport all day. I am convinced that he simply didn't care.

Overall, we cannot recommend this hotel. There are MANY cave hotels in Goreme - choose another.
