The Villa Mahal is just what the doctor ordered for those who are tired of the rat race and who genuinely need some quiet time away. There are no TVs in the rooms, little or no music in the public areas and the guests are also pretty low key. The hotel appears to have an on-going arrangement with a British travel company called Exclusive Escapes, and the middle-aged guests sourced this way made up most of the visitors during our visit. Everyone was civil towards each other, but respected others' privacy. The environment was also very quiet and low-key. The sea is accessed through ladders from the platforms made on the rocks, so there is no beach; but it was very clean and clear. At night, tables were set up right by the sea for extremely romantic dinners. A boat shuttled back and forth to Kalkan until 7 pm, so you don't really need a car or cab, unless you want to eat dinner there.
The staff were positive - all smiles all the time. They even prepared a breakfast to go (unsolicited) for the early morning trip back to the airport. Also, it was a comfort to see how much they look after the numerous street cats in the compound. One showed up on the last day we were there and the nice ladies at the reception had already figured out all the relevant details about the cat and were getting ready to get is neutered and fed.
The only negative about the hotel is that some rooms have toilets without a door. This is awkward. I understand that the owners are planning on installing a door by next summer.
Room Tip: Ask if the toilet has a door
